A blockbuster group stage action in the Emirates NBA Cup is on tap when the Phoenix Suns host the unbeaten Los Angeles Lakers this Tuesday at the Footprint Center.
Los Angeles, which won the inaugural season of the league’s in-season tournament, has raced off to a great 2-0 start following victories over the San Antonio Spurs and the Utah Jazz while Phoenix dropped to 1-1 after losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Will the Suns continue its mastery over the Lakers and score the all-important second win in the Emirates Cup or will the latter remain unbeaten and regain their winning form?
As of press time, here’s how the current Phoenix Suns vs Los Angeles Lakers look like as we head into this exciting Western Conference showdown.
The Phoenix Suns haven’t been the same ever since Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal went down with separate calf injuries.
Explosive scorer Devin Booker was able to keep the Suns’ heads above water as they are still above .50 despite racking up five consecutive losses.
With Beal and Durant back in the lineup, the Suns will have other offensive weapons besides Booker to turn to especially when the going gets tough.
Against the New York Knicks last Wednesday, the Suns found themselves bleeding on offense after allowing Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson to explode for a combined total of 70 points.
While Booker had 33 points and five assists, no other Suns’ players hit the 20-point mark and what’s even worse is they only made 19 of their 50 three-point shot attempts.
All things considered, backing the rejuvenated Phoenix team to cover the spread at these odds may offer plenty of value since they are taking on a Lakers squad that is fresh off a heartbreaking loss to the Denver Nuggets at home.
The Los Angeles Lakers hope to regain their bearings quickly after dropping a 127-102 decision to the Denver Nuggets over the weekend as they travel on the road to take on the retooled Phoenix Suns.
With Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal expected to return for the Suns, the road to third straight Emirates NBA Cup win does not get easier for the Lakers but here are a few takeaways that suggest that they might actually pull it off.
For the Lakers to cover the spread against the Suns, they will need more from what LeBron James and Anthony Davis delivered over the weekend.
It can be recalled that James and Davis were shells of themselves against the Nuggets, scoring 18 and 14 points respectively and what’s even worse is they accounted for seven of the team’s 16 total turnovers.
Should Davis and James deliver their usual numbers against the Suns, backing the Lakers to cover the spread and potentially win outright even with Durant, Beal, and Booker all healthy is something worth looking at.
The Phoenix Suns and the Los Angeles Lakers each has a case of pulling off a victory here, especially with the pedigree they currently have.
With so much unpredictability on the money line market, I am taking on the over total in this matchup. It is also worth noting that the over hit in three of their previous four regular season meetings.
If that’s not good enough, the Suns hit the over in their three previous games this season while the Lakers have done the same thing twice in their previous three.
