The Bills have now handed the franchise to former offensive coordinator Joe Brady, who emerged as the choice after Buffalo conducted nine head-coaching interviews. His promotion provides continuity for a high-powered offense while allowing the organization to reshape a defense that needed a new identity.

That responsibility belongs to new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard. Together, Brady and Leonhard face immediate pressure to deliver the championship breakthrough that eluded the previous regime.

With Buffalo's season win total set at 10.5 by sportsbooks, the challenge is clearly defined. The Bills must remain healthy, sustain their offensive production and establish a more dominant defense. Whether they accomplish those objectives will determine if Buffalo surpasses its projected win total, and finally reaches the Super Bowl stage that has remained frustratingly out of reach.

Middle-Aged Josh

Josh Allen (+600 to win MVP via DraftKings) entered the NFL’s version of middle age when he turned 30 in May, but he remains one of the league’s most physically gifted quarterbacks. The question entering 2026 is not whether Allen can still dominate with his legs, but whether he can become more selective as a runner and avoid the unnecessary punishment that could shorten his prime.

After winning the 2024 NFL MVP award, Allen raised his completion percentage from 63.6% to 69.3% the following season. His 102.0 passer rating was also the second-highest mark of his career, trailing only the 107.2 rating he posted in 2020.

However, two troubling numbers moved in the wrong direction. Allen threw 10 interceptions and absorbed a career-high 40 sacks, several resulting from holding the ball too long or attempting to extend plays that had already broken down.

This season, Allen does not need to become a different quarterback. He must refine the qualities that already make him special. That means processing pressure more quickly, protecting the football, taking available checkdowns and knowing when to abandon a play. He can still weaponize his legs in critical situations, but Buffalo cannot afford to expose its franchise quarterback to unnecessary hits throughout a long season.

Allen’s next step is about efficiency and preservation: fewer reckless plays, fewer sacks and better situational decisions. If he strikes that balance without sacrificing his aggressiveness, he can keep Buffalo’s offense among the NFL’s best while giving the Bills their strongest opportunity to finally break through in the postseason.

The X-Factor

One of the most pressing concerns in Buffalo entering training camp was the state of the receiving corps. Since Stefon Diggs departed following the 2023 season, the Bills have not come close to replacing his production or establishing another consistent No. 1 option.

Joshua Palmer was signed as a free agent last year but endured a disappointing, injury-plagued campaign. Keon Coleman, Buffalo’s second-round selection in 2024, underwhelmed again and could now face competition for playing time from 2026 fourth-round pick Skyler Bell, provided he's fully recovered from a groin injury.

Khalil Shakir remained Allen's most dependable target, leading the Bills with 72 receptions. However, those catches produced only 719 yards and four touchdowns, illustrating the offense's need for more explosive production.

That places considerable pressure on DJ Moore, acquired in a trade with the Chicago Bears, to provide the dynamic playmaking presence Buffalo has lacked. Moore must stretch defenses, create yards after the catch and give Allen a reliable option in critical situations.

The Bills also need tight end Dalton Kincaid to remain healthy and become a more consistent factor. Durability has been a recurring concern since he entered the NFL in 2023. For Buffalo's passing game to reach its ceiling, Moore must deliver, Coleman must progress and Kincaid must stay on the field.

The Bills are well positioned to win at least 11 games because their greatest strength — the offense — should remain firmly intact under Brady. With Allen directing a familiar system and Moore potentially providing the receiving corps with the playmaking presence it has lacked, Buffalo's offense could become even more productive.

The transition to a 3-4 defensive scheme introduces uncertainty. Several members of the front seven must adjust to new positions and responsibilities, and it could take time for the entire unit to become comfortable. However, the Bills do not need the defense to reach its ceiling immediately. Their offensive firepower should provide enough margin for error while the new system develops.

Promoting Brady also minimizes the disruption typically associated with a head-coaching change. He already understands the personnel, has an established relationship with Allen and knows how to maximize Buffalo's offensive strengths. That continuity should keep the Bills from taking a significant step backward without McDermott.

Buffalo remains too talented, experienced and explosive to project outside the playoff field (-320 to make the postseason via DraftKings). If the defense becomes merely reliable, and the offense benefits from improved receiver production, the Bills should surpass their 10.5-win total. Eleven victories represent a realistic expectation, while a 12- or 13-win season is entirely attainable if the transition unfolds smoothly.
