NFL Best Bets: Week 1 Odds & Picks (September 13)

Publish Date: Sep 13, 2026

Key Points
  • The Chicago Bears are 3-0 straight up and 2-1 ATS in the past three meetings with the Carolina Panthers
  • The Arizona Cardinals are 6-1 ATS in their past seven Week 1 games, while opening-week underdogs of at least 6.5 points have gone 32-13-1 ATS.

Week 1 offers NFL bettors their first meaningful opportunity to attack the board, but it may also be the most deceptive week of the regular season.

Oddsmakers and the betting public are working with incomplete information. Preseason games reveal little because coaches protect starters, disguise schemes and avoid showing their full playbooks. Once the regular season begins, several teams will unveil new coordinators, rebuilt offensive lines, altered defensive fronts and personnel packages that have never operated together in a meaningful game.

Coaching changes are equally important. A new offensive coordinator can completely alter a team’s pace, run-pass balance and red-zone approach, while a new defensive scheme may require players to assume unfamiliar responsibilities. Those transitions can create busted assignments, communication breakdowns and unexpected matchup advantages that are difficult to quantify before the opening kickoff.

Week 1 Rewards Preparation, Punishes Assumptions

Quarterback uncertainty adds another layer of volatility. Rookies making their first NFL starts must adjust to faster pressure, disguised coverages and tighter throwing windows. Veterans joining new teams may understand the offense conceptually but still lack timing and chemistry with their receivers. Even established starters can struggle when learning a new system or playing behind a reshuffled line.

That is why Week 1 handicapping requires more than comparing last season’s records and statistics. Bettors must evaluate roster continuity, coaching philosophy, quarterback experience, offensive-line cohesion and how aggressively each team approached the preseason. Market movement also deserves scrutiny because early numbers often reflect offseason projections more than proven performance.

Week 1 is filled with opportunity, but discipline is essential. The strongest wagers are not necessarily attached to the most talented teams. They are found where preparation, continuity and matchup stability provide an edge over uncertainty - and where the point spread has not already accounted for it.

  • Moneyline: Chicago (+178) | Carolina (+150)
  • Total: O/U 47.5 (-102/-120)

  • Spread: New York +1.5 (-112) | Tennessee -1.5 (-108)

  • Total: O/U 38.5 (-110/-110)

Arizona Cardinals at Los Angeles Chargers

  • Spread: Arizona +9.5 (-115) | Los Angeles -9.5 (-105)
  • Moneyline: Arizona (+380) | Los Angeles (-490)
  • Total: O/U 47.5 (-104/-118)

Understanding why a line moved is just as important as recognizing the movement itself. A popular team may attract heavy public betting because of name recognition, offseason hype or last season’s results, forcing sportsbooks to adjust the number without receiving respected sharp action. Conversely, a significant move triggered by professional money may reveal a matchup, injury or pricing advantage before the public recognizes it.

Bettors must also avoid chasing a move after the value has disappeared. A team that was attractive at +4.5 may offer little advantage at +2.5, while a favorite bet heavily at −3 could become overpriced at −5. Week 1 uncertainty often magnifies these adjustments because the market has limited current evidence. The goal is not to follow every move—it is to determine whether the new number still offers value or has created an opportunity on the other side.

Chicago Bears -3 at Carolina Panthers (-115)

Chicago brings a superior quarterback and offensive profile, ranking sixth in total offense (369.2 yards per game) and ninth in scoring (25.9 points). Caleb Williams threw for 3,942 yards with a strong 27-to-7 touchdown-to-interception ratio, while Carolina finished 27th in both yardage (295.6) and scoring (18.3). Williams should benefit from another year of development in Ben Johnson’s system, which emphasizes motion, spacing and favorable matchups before the snap.

The Panthers will also be without starting tackles Ikem Ekwonu and Taylor Moton, creating favorable matchups for Montez Sweat and Chicago’s pass rush. Those offensive-line absences could prevent Carolina from consistently accessing its best weapons. If Carolina must keep additional blockers in protection, Young will have fewer receiving options available and less opportunity to challenge Chicago vertically.

Chicago’s Offense Owns the Matchup

Bryce Young showed improvement with 23 touchdown passes last season, while Tetairoa McMillan surpassed 1,000 receiving yards, but both need adequate protection for deeper concepts to develop. Chicago can disrupt that timing without excessive blitzing, allowing its secondary to keep more defenders in coverage. The Bears should also enter with the more balanced offense, giving Johnson the flexibility to attack Carolina through the air or on the ground.

Chicago is 3-0 straight up and 2-1 ATS in the past three meetings, and its advantages at quarterback, play-caller and along the defensive front should create separation. Lay the field goal, particularly at even money. If the Bears avoid turnovers, their offensive efficiency and ability to pressure Young should eventually produce the decisive scoring margin.

New York Jets +1.5 at Tennessee Titans (-112)

With the total set at 39.5 and Tennessee favored by only 1.5 points, the market projects approximately a 20-19 game, magnifying the value of every possession. Geno Smith, Garrett Wilson and a healthy Breece Hall give New York the more proven offensive core, while Tennessee is installing Brian Daboll’s system around rookie Cam Ward. Smith’s experience becomes particularly valuable in a matchup expected to feature fewer drives and little margin for turnovers.

Ward completed only 13 of 24 preseason passes - a 54.2% rate - for 126 yards and just 5.3 yards per attempt. Those efficiency numbers indicate an offense still finding its timing and unlikely to generate consistent explosive plays. Tennessee can lean on Tony Pollard, but a run-heavy approach would permit New York to load the box, create longer third downs and force Ward to diagnose disguised coverages from the pocket.

Take the Points in a Low-Scoring Game

Minkah Fitzpatrick strengthens a Jets defense equipped to punish rookie mistakes and control the middle of the field. New York has covered five consecutive meetings against Tennessee and won the past two outright, demonstrating that the matchup history extends beyond merely staying within the number. If Fitzpatrick helps eliminate deep completions, the Titans must string together methodical drives behind a quarterback who averaged only 9.7 yards per preseason completion.

The situational numbers also favor New York: teams coming off a turnover differential of minus-0.9 or worse are 14-5-1 ATS in this Week 1 spot, covering at a 73.7% rate. With a projected margin of fewer than two points, taking +1.5 provides value in a game likely decided by one late possession. New York’s quarterback experience, established playmakers and defensive versatility also create a legitimate path to an outright victory if Ward’s preseason inefficiency carries into the opener.

Arizona Cardinals +9.5 at Los Angeles Chargers (-115)

Los Angeles owns the clear defensive advantage after allowing 285.2 yards and 20.0 points per game, but covering double digits requires sustained offensive efficiency. A favorite laying this many points must consistently finish drives, avoid turnovers and create enough separation to withstand a possible backdoor cover. That becomes more difficult in an opener when offensive timing and red-zone execution may still be developing.

Arizona has enough veteran stability with Jacoby Brissett and Trey McBride - who produced 126 receptions, 1,239 yards and 11 touchdowns last season - to shorten the game and remain competitive. Brissett does not need to outduel Justin Herbert; he needs to manage the pocket, convert manageable third downs and repeatedly involve McBride underneath. Sustained possessions would reduce the number of opportunities Los Angeles has to build a commanding lead.

Arizona does not need to match the Chargers’ talent; it must protect the football, extend possessions and limit Justin Herbert’s opportunities. Los Angeles allowed only 285.2 yards and 20.0 points per game, making favorable down-and-distance situations essential. Jeremiyah Love’s expected availability would strengthen a rushing attack designed to control tempo, shorten the game and keep Herbert sidelined while preventing the Chargers’ pass rush from attacking Arizona in obvious passing situations.

The Cardinals are 6-1 ATS in their past seven Week 1 games, while opening-week underdogs of at least 6.5 points have gone 32-13-1 ATS. Los Angeles should win, but a methodical game gives Arizona a realistic path to stay inside the inflated number. Even if the Chargers control most of the afternoon, Arizona’s possession-oriented offense leaves room for a late score to secure the cover.
