A measure of how much the betting experts respect the Lions offense is the fact that Detroit has the shortest odds to be the highest-scoring team on Sunday, at +750 from BetMGM.
The Lions have averaged 32.5 points per game at home last season, and 32.9 PPG the last three seasons at Ford Field. This is an offensive unit that hums like a Detroit motorcar when it plays in turf, especially at home. Which is why I have identified a First TD Scorer from the Lions.
In his rookie season, Isaac TeSlaa flashed signs of his incredible athleticism. There were one-handed TD catches, leaps over defenders, and frantic runs down the sideline for scores. But he only had three starts as a rookie, whereas he will be WR3 this season. He will undoubtedly improve on his 239 yards receiving. But scoring is something TeSlaa knows all about: six of his 16 catches last season were touchdowns.
The Saints have four new starters on defense, a unit that was a strength last season when New Orleans only managed six wins. They will have their work cut out for them vs. Detroit, which arguably has the best combo of skill players in the NFL.
The 2026 NFL season marks about the 8th in a row where Josh Allen has been expected to finally deliver a Super Bowl title for suffering Bills fans. His task in Week 1 will be to wriggle his way through the vaunted Texans defense. Or even just stay on his feet.
In four career games vs Houston, Allen is averaging 7.1 Yards Per Carry. Last year, the Texans held him to 20 yards on five carries, but I have reason to believe Allen will run more this Sunday. that's because Week 1 is when your offense is the most rusty, which begs for a mobile QB to improvise.
In his last two season openers, Allen has scored two touchdowns in each game: that's four TDs in the last two NFL Week 1's.
The most intriguing matchup of the Sunday/Monday games is John Harbaugh in new colors to participate in one of the NFL's oldest rivalries. The New York Giants new head coach has already displayed that Harbaugh Family intensity, most recently in sparring with the pestering New York media. All that bluster and chin-flexing is important for one reason: Harbaugh's football teams usually adopt his toughness.
This is not going to be like recent Giants/Cowboys games. In the last six games between the Cowboys and Giants, we've seen an average of 52.7 PPG. In four of those games, one team scored at least 34 points.
The Giants will not finish 26th in defense in 2026 under Harbaugh. But you can expect them to hyper-focus their run game, which was effective last season. Only three teams scored more TDs on the ground in 2025. Cam Skattebo scored 5 rushing TDs in his rookie season, in only 8 games before an ugly ankle injury ended his season.
The Harbaugh Offense will almost certainly average a minimum of 30 rushes per game. Last season, only the Bills ran the ball more than the G-Men. Skattebo may not do his patented back-flip, but a sustained drive would likely end with RB1 Skattebo getting the chance to plunge into the end zone.
