In honor of the first day of the 2025 NBA Playoffs and the 15th anniversary of LeBron's poster dunk on James Johnson in the 2010 NBA Playoffs, I thought it would be fun to look back at the greatest dunks in NBA Playoff history.
Thanks to legendary NBA Mixtape editor Maxamillion711, you can watch most of these dunks in a 24-minute video he just uploaded to his must-subscribe YouTube channel. I will go through most of them, starting with James Johnson's "Kodak Moment!"
Commentary: "Click, Click! Get ready for your Kodak moment. Fakes baseline, goes middle, the flashbulbs goes off, poster time!"
The worst part for rookie James Johnson is he only played four minutes in this game and somehow ended up with three fouls and arguably LeBron's best poster. That's saying a lot, considering Bron has played 22 seasons.
But shout out to Johnson, who is still in the league and has built a reputation for being one of the last guys you want to mess with: second-degree black bet with a reported 20-0 kickboxing record.
LeBron finished the game with a game-high 40 points on 16-of-23 shooting.
Commentary: "A facial served up by Clyde Drexler."
If you watched THE LAST DANCE, you probably remember MJ famously saying, "I took offense to that," when he heard a Drexler comparison. Jordan responded by averaging 36 in the Finals, which included the "shrug game."
Drexler wasn't playing at MJ's level but did average 25 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, and had one nasty dunk on Bill Cartwright and his deadly elbows.
Gill Quote: “It’s one thing to call the devil out; it’s another thing to face him."
Gill faced off with MJ plenty of times before this 1998 ECF game, but this play summarized the greatness of MJ.
Tie game with 47 seconds left in overtime (I'm sure youngsters will laugh at the 91-91 score). MJ steals the ball from Kerry Kittles, sticks his tongue out, and goes up for the and-1 dunk on Gill. After bouncing off the pad, he looks at Gill and slaps his hands together. His 17th free throw of the night gave him a game-high 39 points (two points less than the Nets scored in the second half).
Gill has quite a few funny stories about MJ, including when Jordan wouldn't leave his house until he won all his money back playing cards. Another amusing one is Gill finding out that Jordan bought a newer Ferrari than his.
"My girlfriend goes, 'Hey, I like that one. Can you get that one?' I'm like, 'That motherf****r'… I'm thinking, 'I just can't beat this guy.'"
Commentary: "This doesn't look like a Playoff game. This looks like Rucker Park."
It also looks like the perfect way to start a Game 1! The Cavs jumped out to an 8-3 lead; LeBron got a steal and threw it to Kyrie, who tossed it off the backboard to James for the left-hand dunk. Time out, Raptors.
LeBron finished the game with 35 points and averaged 36 during the 4-game sweep of the Raptors.
Here's what LeBron had to say about Kyrie during an episode of his MIND THE GAME podcast: "There was nothing on the basketball floor that Kyrie couldn't do. Sitting here watching it, I'm playing like so f*****g happy and so proud to watch him continue his growth or whatever the case may be. At the same time, I'm so f*****g mad at the same time that I am not his running mate anymore."
Commentary: "Give him a little momentum and look out below."
A 2nd-year Russell Westbrook blows by Derek Fisher and throws down a 1-hand dunk on Lamar Odom.
This was an eventful time in Odom's life. He married a Kardashian and won the first back-to-back NBA Championships in 2009. Then, he won the Sixth Man Of The Year award in 2011.
Commentary: "I want to hear you say, 'Throw it down, big man! Throw it down!'" "I was told you had personally licensed that phrase, and there were residuals."
Like the iconic Morry Gash photo of Wade celebrating a LeBron dunk, the photo of this dunk is way better than the video. That said, watching Shaq throw down a dunk between all five Nets is impressive.
Equally impressive is Shaq averaging 36.3 points (60% shooting), 12.3 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks during the sweep that gave the Lakers their 3-Peat.
Commentary: (Reggie Miller's laugh before saying, "On LeBron!")
Dunking on an NBA GOAT is one thing. Dunking on an NBA GOAT, looking right at the TNT camera, and doing the GOAT's celebration is Disrespectful Hall of Fame material. On top of all that, it happened during a tie score in the 4th quarter, and a foul should have been called on LeBron.
Murray finished the game with 32 points and the game-winner that sent the Lakers to Cancun.
Commentary: "Gatling got a piece of it, comes up and says, 'Wow! We did a job, didn't we?'"
Shawn Kemp had two of the greatest Playoff dunks ever in this game. The first of the two greats goes out to Chris Gatling, who had to nod his head and give Kemp dap after fouling and getting dunked on by the Reign Man. The other is the last video in this post.
Commentary: "Wiggins still looking for his first field goal. That will do it!"
After going scoreless in the first quarter, Andrew Wiggins faked out Tyus Jones, drove down the middle, and threw down a two-hand dunk on Brandon Clarke that erupted the Warriors bench.
It's safe to say that 2022 was the best year of Wiggins' career. He made his first and only All-Star game and won a Championship after averaging 18 points and nine rebounds in the Finals vs the Celtics.
Commentary: "Ray Allen, Tony Allen, and the finish!"
Before Tony Allen rebranded himself as THE GRINDFATHER and was yelling "First Team All-Defense" at opponents, he was a high-flyer on the Celtics.
One of his best dunks came during the 2010 Playoffs when he threw this dunk down on Antawn Jamison. It was his last memorable play before making the wise decision to sign with the Grizzlies a few months later.
Commentary: "It's ridiculous how athletic this guy is."
JaVale was mainly known as a regular on SHAQTIN' A FOOL during these days, but this dunk and "get off me" move on Andrew Bogut even impressed Shaq.
He signed with the Warriors three years later and won back-to-back championships. After his short stint in Golden State, he joined the Lakers, where he won his third championship.
Commentary: "He made it look so easy. It wasn't easy."
Hill is one of the biggest "What ifs" in NBA history.
Phil Jackson thought so highly of him that he briefly considered trading Kobe Bryant for him in the late 90s.
Besides dunking on Mutombo in 1997, he also made his first All-NBA First Team that year.
Commentary: "Ginobili, turn back the hands of time."
Manu was 37 years old with a giant bald spot on the back of his head when he bullied Ray Allen to the basket and posterized Chris Bosh, who, according to Rich Paul, didn't make a "BIG 3" with Wade and LeBron.
This game ended with Manu celebrating his fourth and final NBA Championship and Miami's BIG (?) losing their final game together.
Commentary: "What can Brown do for you? Jump out the building and finish."
Shannon Brown has a ridiculous highlight reel. But the funniest thing about it is his two most known highlights are a missed dunk on Jason Richardson and a goaltending call. The play that counted that doesn't get enough attention is this oop that ended with the ball flying through the hoop and smacking Ray Allen right in the face.
Commentary: "Embiid is shaken up as well after Collins hammered it home on the big guy."
John The Baptist loved this dunk on Joel Embiid so much that he printed it on a shirt he wore during a postgame. I'm sure this is the only dunk in NBA history where a guy got dunked on, clotheslined, and ended up with the foul while lying on the floor in pain.
Magic Johnson quote: "He hung on the rim, looked at the man and said, 'Oh yeah, that was me.'"
Shaq isn't the only NBA great to dunk on Aaron Williams between the entire Nets team. Reggie Miller (Yes, REGGIE MILLER!) pulled it off with his trademark 2-hand stretch dunk in 2002.
Despite playing three more seasons, the surprising dunk ended up being the final dunk of his career. The funniest thing about Miller dunks being "surprising" is he's 6'7" tall.
Go to 9:11 mark in the top video to see this dunk in higher quality
Commentary: "That is a throw down. People stunned. No respect for the elder statesman of the league."
Shout out to Kevin Willis, who was almost 41 when Richard Jefferson dunked on him during the 2003 NBA Finals. Don't feel bad for him because he was celebrating his first and only Championship a few days later and somehow played until he was 44!
As for RJ, he's one of the most underrated poster makers in league history.
Commentary: "Doug Christie is 2nd Team All-Defense so this guy is no slouch out there."
Kobe Bryant crossing Doug Christie and then dunking on the player he was traded for on Draft night was great. What made it even greater was this video of Shaq recreating the CHEERS theme with the following lyrics:
You said we wouldn't win at your place
Guess what? Kobe dunked it in your face
You need to go where people know your name
Commentary: "Phoenix has to foul; Antetekounmpo throws it down!"
He said, "Phoenix has to foul," not "Phoenix should play dirty and push a player in the air." I'm not going to argue that CP3 is a "dirty player," but this was a dirty play that helped make it more iconic.
Giannis finished with 32 in this game and then followed it up with one of the greatest NBA Finals performances ever: 50 points (64% FG), 14 rebounds, and 5 blocks.
Commentary: "I don't know about this but Rihanna just walked in front of me. Are you kidding me?"
I miss the duo of Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson, specifically JVG. I know some basketball purists would have loved to hear more about LeBron dunking on JaVale McGee, but hearing JVG talk about seeing Rihanna at the NBA Finals makes this one of the greatest Playoff dunk videos ever.
The Cavs lost this Finals series despite LeBron averaging a triple-double: 33.6 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists.
Commentary: (the scream)
Long before Scottie Pippen and Charles Barkley became enemies and teammates simultaneously in Houston, Pippen was a Bull, and Barkley was a member of the 76ers that couldn't beat the Bulls.
You can't put much blame on Chuck, who put up these numbers during the 1990 Playoffs:
Pippen got Barkley again during Game 6 of the 1993 NBA Finals. The Finals Barkley said he would win because "God wanted the Suns to win."
Commentary: "He just sucked the gravity right out of the building."
Everyone remembers Tracy McGrady's dunk on 7'6" Shawn Bradley and forgets that he also had 28 points, 10 assists, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 blocks, and the game-winning shot.
The coldest thing T-Mac said about this dunk was that he heard it was Bradley's final season, so he was "sending him a going away present."
Commentary: "Buckle up for Kobe Bryant! He just sucked the gravity out of the Target Center!"
Almost a decade before Kevin Harlan said T-Mac "sucked the gravity out of the building," he said Kobe did it to the Target Center with this incredible baseline windmill. Kobe also had a game-high 32 points in the Lakers 30-point win in Game 5 vs the Wolves.
Commentary: "What a move by Rose. Oh! Yes, and it counts!"
That's the youngest MVP in NBA history throwing down on Heat center Joel Anthony.
As spectacular as Rose was at the rim, he couldn't buy a bucket in this game. He shot 8-of-27 from the field and was 1-of-9 from three. His seven turnovers were also a game-high in the overtime loss.
Commentary: "Drops the sledgehammer. They are going to wipe away!"
One of the refs actually called an offensive foul on Andrew Wiggins for this poster dunker that left Luka Doncic holding his face while lying on the floor. Steve Kerr challenged it, and the bucket counted.
The look of pain on Luka's face is the look of pain all Mavs fans feel watching this video and seeing Luka and Jalen Brunson in Mavs uniforms.
Commentary: "Durant says to Brendan Haywood, 'excuse me, I got an appointment with the rim."
This 2011 dunk by OKC Kevin Durant might be the best dunk of his career. It's the only time I can recall ever seeing KD's head above the rim.
Of course, the refs had to ruin the moment by calling a taunting tech. The technical foul caused Jeff Van Gundy to hilariously say, "You should be able to say whatever you want to whoever you want. And your Mom is here too."
Commentary: "He did it! Michael shakes the finger. He finally got his dunk on Mount Mutombo."
The above video starts with Mutombo and Michael Jordan at All-Star weekend, arguing whether MJ has ever dunked on Deke.
MJ: "He knows he's lying. Alright, we going to cancel your Green card."
They met again in the second round of the Playoffs, and that's when MJ finally got his poster and then did Mutombo's signature "No! No! No!" finger wag. This is also the day MJ completed the Georgetown trilogy: Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning and Mount Mutombo.
Commentary: "You talk about jumping off a trampoline. Up, up and away!"
This wild series is most known for Kobe's Games 6 and 7 performances. In Game 6, Kobe scored 50 points on 20-of-35 shooting. In Game 7, he had 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting and only attempted three shots in the 2nd half. His only 2nd half-point was a technical free throw.
This was puzzling, especially since earlier in the week, he told reporters, "I can get any shot I want against this team. Any time. Any place."
After hearing Charles Barkley's rant about the Game 7 performance, Kobe called up Barkley to curse him out and then appeared on INSIDE THE NBA to discuss the game.
Commentary: "You talk about extension. That's extension."
This might be the best Playoff oop from LeBron. Pause the video at the 21-second mark and just admire the athleticism. If you appreciate head-at-the-rim videos, check out this clip of LeBron catching a way-off pass from Mo Williams.
This series is one of the more popular chapters in the Deshawn Stevenson/LeBron beef. The beef included everything from DeShawn calling LeBron "overrated" to a diss track by Jay-Z and a Playoff appearance from Soulja Boy. Read more about it here.
Commentary: "Kevin McHale made a drastic mistake."
This remains my favorite clip of a player pulling off a tip-dunk from his missed shot. I consider Dominique Wilkins to be one of the three greatest in-game dunkers ever, and the dunk happened between Hall of Famers Larry Bird, Robert Parish, and Dennis Johnson. That's more impressive than Aaron Williams and his New Jersey teammates, who Reggie Miller and Shaq dunked between.
Nique had 35 in this game, 40 in Game 4, and 47 in Game 7, which is considered one of the greatest Playoff duels ever. Bird had 34 in that Game 7, including 20 in the 4th quarter.
Commentary: "Tatum drives down and throws it down!"
You know a dunk means something when a player has it blown up, printed, framed, and hung up in their house. Tatum has a photo of his dunk on LeBron from Game 7 of the 2018 Eastern Conference Finals hanging in his house.
There are also only two basketball photos for sale at Fenway Park. One of them is Tatum dunking on LeBron.
Commentary: "In your face! Kevin Johnson!"
I would like to see a compilation video of players missing a jump shot, getting the ball back, and then dunking on someone. I can't recall any other examples, but I feel like it's happened a few times. Regardless of the instances, this is the most famous: 6'1" Kevin Johnson dunking on 7'0" two-time Defensive Player Of The Year Hakeem Olajuwon.
Like Tatum, KJ was so proud of his dunk that he wanted a poster. Unlike Tatum, KJ actually wanted the victim to sign it.
“Kevin Johnson tried to send a poster of him dunking on Dream and have Dream sign it,” Sam Cassell said. “Man, I’ll never forget Dream told Kevin Johnson, ‘Don’t you ever disrespect me again.' Dream didn’t play that back then.”
Commentary: "Oh, a Ja breaker!"
Remember when Ja Morant said he was going to stop dunking? It didn't last long, and that's a good thing because he's one of the few players in today's NBA who is giving us posters on a routine basis.
The Timberwolf on this poster is former Ballislife All-American Malik Beasley, who just had one of the greatest shooting seasons ever in Detroit.
Commentary: "LeBron James with no regard for human life."
“We broke LeBron. You understand how he got to Cleveland, how he got to Miami, Bill? We didn’t give a f*** about LeBron. We didn’t fear LeBron, and we didn’t think that he could beat all five of us."
That's what Kevin Garnett had to say about Bron during a 2019 interview with Bill Simmons. He might have been right, but at this moment, on May 12th, 2008, LeBron had no problem with three of them: Pierce, Posey, and then KG.
LeBron finished with a game-high 21 points in the 88-77 win. The series featured four games with the losing team scoring less than 80 points.
Commentary: "We are seeing a superstar in the making."
One of my favorite memes I saw on Twitter after this dunk was an image of Chris "Birdman" Andersen with the caption, "All I saw was a bunch of black guys yelling, 'WORLD STAR!'"
And Reggie Miller was right when he said, "We are seeing a superstar in the making."
Commentary: "Patrick Ewing tonight has been thoroughly dunked upon."
MJ called it his favorite dunk.
I've heard many call it his best dunk.
Some call this MJ's best play.
I even read a comment calling this "the illest move in basketball history."
I'm not sure if I agree with those statements, but the photos of this dunk by NYC street photographer Matt Weber are phenomenal.
MJ: "I told (Ewing), Georgetown guys don't block shots, they take charges. I dunked it on him so hard it was unbelievable. Every time I see him, that's the first thing I remind him of."
Commentary: "He turned Andrei Kirilenko into a screensaver."
Baron "Don't call me B-Diddy anymore" Davis' dunk on Andrei Kirilenko is the highlight most people think of when bringing up the two-time NBA All-Star or the "We Believe Warriors."
There's just so many great things about the video/dunk
Unfortunately for the We Believe Warriors, this was the only game they won in the series.
Commentary: "Rebound O'Neal. Portland has three timeouts left. The Lakers have two. Bryant to Shaq!"
I thought Shaq's MVP season was going to come to an end in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals. Then the Lakers outscored the Blazers 31-11 in the final 11 minutes. The dagger in the final minute was an alley-oop from Kobe to Shaq, who celebrated by pointing at his son, Shareef, in the crowd. Tyronn Lue then ruined the moment by jumping up and giving Shaq a high five.
I once made an IG post that said, "Some Blazers fans will tell you the duo of David Stern & Dick Bavetta deserve as much credit as the duo of Shaq & Kobe."
Shaq responded, "Thanks Dick and David."
Commentary: "Tomahawk jam! Yeah, baby! The Reign Man!"
From the post Greatest NBA Revenge Games:
In Game 2 of the first round of the 1992 NBA Playoff series between the Sonics and the Golden State Warriors, Kemp and center Alton Listor got into a squabble. Punches were thrown, and since this was 1992, they both stayed in the game, which the Warriors won after a dominating second half.
Midway through the second quarter of Game 4, Kemp catches a pass at the three-point line, takes one dribble, cuffs the ball like he's about to windmill dunk, and then throws down on the 7'0" Alton Lister, who tried to take a charge.
With Lister sliding across the floor and his feet in the air, Kemp squatted down, pointed at Lister with both hands and then ran back down the court with a pumped fist. Again, since this was 1992, the refs didn't give Kemp a taunting tech -- a term that would generate laughter back then.
Commentary: "Scottie Pippen in the face of Patrick Ewing, who did not appreciate it!"
You could make a 2-minute compilation video of just Patrick Ewing getting dunked on by Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan. And the final dunk in that mix has to be this Pippen one on Ewing during the 1994 Eastern Conference Semifinals. The dunk is one of the best, but what Pippen did after the dunk makes it so memorable and gloriously disrespectful.
I don't know if this is true, but according to someone claiming to be a ball boy at this game, Pippen told Ewing to "Eat deez nuts" as he stepped over the New York legend.
I also highly recommend this episode about the dunk on THE FIRST BALLOT HALL OF FAME podcast with guest Ben Osborne.
