On a recent episode of GIL'S ARENA, Gilbert Arenas complained about the lack of great fastbreak dunks in today's NBA:
"You on a fastbreak, you supposed to monkey dunk that MF. Boom! I'm here! What happened to that type of game? When did going on a fastbreak and doing litle soft s***? There's moments in the game when you get to turn the crowd. Go back and watch Michael Jordan and people like Dominique Wilkins. That MF would windmill on the middle, left side or right side."
Co-host Rashad McCants brought up that these dunks led to great photos on trading cards and wall posters and said that's not important anymore to today's players, like it was to players in the past like Kevin Garnett.
I agree we aren't getting as many poster dunks in today's three-point shooting league (the Bulls and Hornets missed a combined 75 threes in a game last night, and this is the second time they have done it this season). I also agree we aren't getting as many "monkey dunks" as the ones Latrell Sprewell used to throw down angrily, and we don't have anyone throwing down windmills like The Human Highlight Film. But many great dunks are still happening daily in today's NBA.
Despite Ja Morant saying he's not going to dunk anymore, you can expect some of the Top 10 Dunks Of The Year nominees from him.
If Obi Toppin is open on a fastbreak, you can expect an Eastbay dunk that will make Tommy Heinsohn roll in his grave.
If Anthony Edwards is on the court and not taking one of his ten three-point attempts, there's a chance you will see a dead body like this.
DUNKER: ANTHONY EDWARDS
VICTIM: JOHN COLLINS
DATE OF CRIME: MARCH 18, 2024
Anthony Edwards had this hilarious reaction to seeing a video of the dunk for the first time: "Wooohaaaaah! Lil a** n****! Oh my God! That's the best dunk of my career. I'm not going to lie. I couldn't even react because I dislocated my finger."
As for Collins, he left the game with a head contusion that led to this quote from Draymond Green: "He completey baptized John Collins. Made him fall and grab his eye, like his eye was hurting. Even if you have a head contusion, you can't announce that you have a head contusion. Just kinda got roll with it. You can't leave the game. What if you never go in the game again and your last seconds on the court was that? You gonna be remembered like that? You can't leave the game, man!"
DUNKER: CHRISTIAN BRAUN
VICTIM: RUDY GOBERT
DATE OF CRIME: NOVEMBER 1, 2024
I'm assuming Draymond Green also enjoyed this dunk since he's such a fan of Rudy Gobert. Midway through the 4th quarter, one of the league's best white dunkers threw down a 2-hand dunk on the Stifle Tower, bumped him, and then got pushed by the 4 x Defensive Player Of The Year. The refs also hit Braun with a taunting tech.
DUNKER: ANDRE JACKSON JR
VICTIMS: JALEN SLAWSON
DATE OF CRIME: MARCH 12, 2024
The Atlanta Hawks once fined their bench for excessively celebrating some crazy shots by Larry Bird. That's what popped in my head when I saw the Sacramento Kings bench jump out of their seats when Andre Jackson Jr jumped so high he got his chest at the rim on a putback dunk over Jalen Slawson. Besides the bench, Kings center and Shaqtin' a Fool legend JaVale McGee reacted like a person does when watching a disturbing bodily injury.
The Kings' management didn't fine the bench, but they recently fired Mike Brown, among a million other stupid things this year.
DUNKER: 2024 ALLEN IVERSON
VICTIMS: NOAH CLOWNEY
DATE OF CRIME: NOVEMBER 19, 2024
Tre Mann's commitment to bringing back the early 00s and honoring Allen Iverson with his on and off-the-court look this season deserves acknowledgment. The Hornets announcer, Eric Collins, also deserves acknowledgment for his over-the-top reactions to highlights like this Mann dunk on Noah Clowney: "Make it hurt Tre! Woooowww! Looking like Vince Carter! Tre Mann! Oh my! Are you kidding me!"
As expected, the oversensitive refs called a taunting foul that would not have been called during the Iverson days.
DUNKER: ISAIAH JOE
VICTIM: UNCLE JEFF
DATE OF CRIME: MARCH 27, 2024
38-year-old Jeff Green has made a lot of posters while playing on 11 teams in 17 years. And he ended up on one earlier this year courtesy of 6'3" 24-year-old Isaiah Joe. If it wasn't bad enough seeing our favorite Uncle get dunked on, Green ended up on the floor, and I couldn't help but notice how big his bald spot was getting.
The dunk also happened in OKC, where a young Green used to make his posters during his early 20s.
DUNKER: JALEN GREEN
VICTIM: CADE CUNNINGHAM
DATE OF CRIME: NOVEMBER 10, 2024
I'm sure you have seen the high school video of Cade Cunningham playfully slapping Jalen Green in the face. Green got some payback a month ago when he slapped this dunk over Cade and, of course, got a tech from one of those dunk-hating referees that the league has.
The dunk was so nasty that Cade had to give Green his props with a head nod as Uncle Jeff pointed at him from the bench.
DUNKER: KELDON JOHNSON
VICTIMS: WIGGINS & SGA
DATE OF CRIME: NOVEMBER 19, 2024
Nobody inbounds the ball faster than a guy who just got dunked on. In this case, it was MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander after getting dunked on by Big Body Keldon Johnson. SGA can blame teammate Aaron Wiggins for "touching Mother Earth" and allowing Johnson the runway for the dunk.
Johnson's reaction to the dunk would make Spurs legends Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard proud because he jogged back on defense like it was just another two points.
DUNKER: JAYLEN BROWN
VICTIMS: LUKA, KYRIE & GAFFORD
DATE OF CRIME: JUNE 6, 2024
Many people have criticized Jaylen Brown's left-hand and (IMO underrated) handles. It might not be Kyrie-like handles, but it was good enough to have Luka Doncic swiping at air from behind, which led to Brown flushing it between Daniel Gafford and Boston-favorite Kyrie Irving. The dunk didn't go in clean, but considering it happened in the NBA Finals against two of the best players in the league, that makes up for it.
Soon after, those hands held up a Championship and Finals MVP trophy and celebrated with Kysre Gondrezick.
DUNKER: LEBRON JAMES
VICTIM: PAUL GEORGE
DATE OF CRIME: JANUARY 7, 2024
A week after turning 39 years old, LeBron showed Paul George that he's still one of the best when "he's going downhill with a head of steam." PG made the unwise business decision to take a charge and ended up on a poster and picking up a foul as Christian Wood did his best HOME ALONE impersonation on the bench.
The 76ers then made the business decision to sign George during the summer. If you ask most 76ers fans right now, they will tell you that decision was as unwise as trying to take a charge on a LeBron dunk.
DUNKER: JA MORANT
VICTIM: US
DATE OF CRIME: DECEMBER 7, 2024
On December 4th of 2014, high-flying Ja Morant told reporters he wasn't going to dunk anymore:
"I'm not trying to dunk at all. Y'all think I'm lying. I'm dead serious...Hey, two points is two points. I get it done. That's all that matters."
Three days later, Ja threw down one of the best dunks of the year with a double-clutch reverse dunk. It was reminiscent of Vince Carter's reverse against the Pacers, left Jayson Tatum in shock, and made Brian Scalabrine say, "This guy is not human."
The White Mamba is right, and because he's "not human," he has multiple appearances on the best dunks of the year list this year and probably every year moving forward.
Shout out to Golden Hoops for putting together this compilation. Here are all 100 dunks contained in this video
