The 2026-27 college football season gets underway Saturday afternoon with the Aer Lingus College Football Classic featuring the North Carolina Tar Heels and TCU Horned Frogs. TCU is a substantial favorite in this game, but in season openers, that doesn’t always mean much.

Of course, in this case, it might. Why? Because Bill Belichick’s North Carolina team was an absolute disaster last season. Can one of the greatest coaches in NFL history get things turned around in his second season as a college football head coach? How his Tar Heels play in this game will give us an idea.

But before we start talking about the game, let’s take a look at the latest betting odds (via FanDuel).

Here is the betting line for UNC vs. TCU with odds from FanDuel:

According to these odds, TCU has a 78.26% chance of winning, and the Tar Heels have a 25.64% chance of winning. So, TCU is expected to win, but at those odds there is no value in betting the moneyline. But can we count on the Horned Frogs to cover an 8.5-point spread?

Under head coach Sonny Dykes (since 2022), TCU has gone 28-23-2 ATS (36-17 SU) and 3-2 ATS (3-2 SU) in neutral site games. When favored, they’ve gone 21-17-1 ATS (30-9 SU). As for North Carolina under Bill Belichick, we only have one season as a reference point—and it wasn’t pretty.

Belichick began his college coaching career against the Horned Frogs in last season’s opener. His team was a 3.5-point underdog, and they went on to lose by 34. The Tar Heels were underdogs in 9 of 12 games and went 1-8 SU and 3-6 ATS. In the three games in which they were favored, UNC won all three and went 2-1 ATS.

North Carolina vs. TCU: Preview

Let’s take a look at both teams before discussing my pick and the best bets for this game.

North Carolina Tar Heels

North Carolina hoped hiring one of the NFL’s greatest head coaches, Bill Belichick, would instantly elevate the program, but that didn’t happen. Much of the talent he recruited failed to pan out, which was clear in the opener and never improved.

But Belichick is back for a second season. The roster was overhauled once again. Belichick added Bobby Petrino, whom he hired as his offensive coordinator, in hopes that he could work some magic on what was a terrible offense last season. Of course, it doesn’t matter who the coaches are if the talent is not there.

Former Wisconsin quarterback Billy Edwards won the QB competition over two other transfers. He gives the Tar Heels some experience behind center; in 2024, he averaged 262 yards per game for Maryland. But he ended up missing most of 2025 with an injury.

Consistency in the run game will help give Edwards time to throw downfield. When they ran well last season (145+ yards), the Tar Heels won. Petrino’s Arkansas team averaged 191 yards per game on the ground last season and went over 145 in every game but two.

As for the defense, it really wasn’t too bad last season. However, the unit brought back two starters, cornerbacks Marcus Allen and Kaleb Cost. This unit will be rebuilt through transfers, additions, and recruits, with several players stepping into expanded roles. Of course, to make things a little more challenging, defensive coordinator Stephen Belichick is not with the team.

UNC has not named an interim coordinator. Bill Belichick is expected to handle the play-calling duties.

TCU Horned Frogs

We don’t hear TCU referenced in national championship conversations, but Sonny Dykes has quietly developed the program into one of the better ones in the nation (or at least the Big 12). During his tenure (four seasons), his Horned Frogs are 36-17, they’ve played for the national championship, and went 9-4 in each of the last two seasons.

He is clearly doing something right in Fort Worth.

His offense was not very good at running the ball, but he had the No. 8 passing attack in the country and averaged 30.7 points per game. But with his quarterback jumping ship to Indiana, will it be just as good? Losing Josh Hoover stings, but the Horned Frogs got a solid replacement in fifth-year senior and former Harvard QB, Jaden Craig.

But, as important as that move is, hiring offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis away from UConn may be the most crucial. His offense at UConn averaged 445 yards per game and 35 points per game. It was good in the run game and didn’t do one thing TCU’s offense did a lot last season—turn the ball over.

Of course, changing an offensive identity is never easy. It will likely take some time to get things right. For one, the coaching staff built the offensive line to pass block, but it will now need to become just as adept at run blocking, too (easier said than done).

If the defense doesn’t improve, it could make any struggles to get the offense on track even worse. They have a veteran secondary that should be decent, but it will need to get a lot more help from the pass rush. It ranked No. 11 in the conference in sacks last season and didn’t make too many plays in the backfield either (also No. 11 in the conference).

North Carolina vs. TCU: My Picks

The Ireland games have been pretty close, with the Notre Dame-Navy game in 2023 the only one of the last five not decided by a field goal. Scores haven’t been too high either, as teams are still working out the kinks and figuring out what they have. The final score of the last three was under this total (46.5).

It is not hard to understand why TCU is favored as much as it is. But I don’t think Belichick is getting the respect he deserves. Yes, his first season as a college coach was a disaster. However, the Patriots did not dominate the NFL for as long as they did solely because of Tom Brady.

Belichick knows football; he just has to figure out the nuances of the college game. Bobby Petrino will go a long way to accomplishing that goal on the offensive side. UNC’s defense wasn’t bad last season, and Belichick should be able to maintain a solid level of play while his DC is out.

As for TCU, Sonny Dykes is an accomplished coach, but the competition in the Ivy League doesn’t compare to that of the ACC or Big 12. Asking pass blockers to run block is easier said than done. The team needs to emphasize the run. But expecting the offensive line to have it down in the season opener is unrealistic. The Horned Frogs defense was not good last season.

Teams aired it out against them last season, which is probably what North Carolina will do.

My Pick: North Carolina +8.5 (FanDuel)

Sonny Dykes knows what he’s doing, so TCU should win this game outright, but UNC will be better than expected and will keep this one close.

UNDER 46.5 (-110, FanDuel)

Both offenses will be a work in progress for at least the first few weeks of the season. With TCU looking to run the ball more, I doubt we’ll see them put up 30+. Both teams will be lucky to crack 21 points in this game without the help of a few big plays (and some breakdowns by the other’s defense).

TCU will place greater emphasis on running the ball, but the offense will not try to reinvent itself in a single game. The offense will still feature the passing game, and Craig will probably target his most experienced receiver early and often—especially in the red zone.  He had nine catches for 136 yards and a touchdown against UNC last season.

I wouldn’t expect another 100+ yard day, but he’ll score at least one touchdown.
