Fans typically must wait until the gold medal game for this marquee matchup, but not this year. The next edition of one of the most storied and historic rivalries in Olympic history is scheduled for Group Play. I’m talking about Tuesday’s women’s ice hockey game between Team USA vs. Team Canada.
Both teams are undefeated in Group A, but that comes as no surprise, as Team Canada and Team USA are easily the two best teams in the tournament. Despite Canada’s historical dominance, the Canadians are not the betting favorite for this contest, that is Team USA.

Of course, once the puck drops it doesn't matter who the favorite was.
Team Canada and Team USA will face off at 2:10 p.m. EST on Tuesday, February 9, at the Milano Santagiulia IHO Arena in Lombardy, Italy. The odds for the game are as follows (via FanDuel):
Team USA is favored to win the gold medal at -170, giving them a 62.96% chance of winning. The odds for Team Canada are +130, giving them a 43.48% shot.

Hockey fans have not had to wait four years to watch one of the greatest rivalries in sports. Team Canada and Team USA started facing off in a series of games each year following the 2018 Winter Olympics.
It began with a three-game series in February 2019 in which Canada won 2-1. The series was renewed the following year for five games, two in December 2019 and three in February 2020. This time, Team USA came out on top 4-1.
It looked like Team USA might be ready to take control of the rivalry during the 2022-23 edition of the series. The series broke up the schedule with three games in November 2022, two in December 2022, and two in February 2023. Team USA won the first three, but Team Canada took the final four to win the series 4-3.
The following year was much of the same, as Team USA once again won the first three, only to lose the last four. Team Canada retained control of the series in 2024-25, going 3-2. But Team USA dominated the four-game series in November and December 2025, winning all four games.
Team USA has not missed a beat in the Group Play round, starting with a dominant win over the Czech Republic (Czechia), 5-1, on Feb. 5. They followed that win with a shutout against Finland, 5-0, on February 7, and did the same to Switzerland, beating the Swiss 5-0 (Feb. 9).
As for Team Canada, it was scheduled to play in the opener against Finland, but the game was postponed due to a norovirus outbreak affecting Team Finland. But Team Canada promptly took care of business, shutting out Switzerland, 4-0 (Feb. 7) and defeating Czechia 5-1 (Feb. 9).
It is hard to ignore Team USA's domination in the four-game Rivalry Series, which effectively served as a tune-up for both squads ahead of the Olympics. But in the broad scheme of things, while convincing, the victories are meaningless. Both teams have made changes/improvements since then.
Team Canada undoubtedly dissected film from the games to see where they went wrong. But Team USA has some impressive offensive talent on the ice. This meeting will be a much more competitive game, but Team USA will win by 2+ goals.
