WNBA Best Bets (July 2): Dream & Mystics, Wings & Sun, Storm & Mercury Odds & Picks

The WNBA is back in action after a short break for the Commissioner's Cup, as the season resumes with three games, two on the East Coast and a third in the desert.

The Atlanta Dream are one-half game back of third-place Golden State in the league standings, and can leapfrog the idle Valkyries with a road win over the Washington Mystics. The game tips at 7:30 p.m. ET and is available on WNBA League Pass.

The Dallas Wings are in sixth place and hope to avoid a letdown as they open a four-game road trip at the upset-minded Connecticut Sun in an 8 p.m. ET tip. Viewers can watch Paige Bueckers and company on Amazon Prime.

The nightcap will be in Phoenix, where Alyssa Thomas returns to the lineup for the Mercury, who are looking to close the gap on the eighth and final playoff spot before the All-Star Break. Last year's runner-up hosts the Seattle Storm at 10 p.m. ET on League Pass.

Atlanta Dream at Washington Mystics

While all eyes remain on the league's big three in Minnesota, New York and Las Vegas, the Dream have one of the most dominating starting lineups in the league. And when it finally starts flowing with consistency, they will remind everyone just how good they can be. And while they've won four straight in this series, and covered four of the last six, they arrive in the nation's capital having lost three straight.

The Mystics should not be slept on. They're sitting in eighth place, just 1.5 games behind Dallas and Indiana. They're in after that historic 124-123 4OT victory over the Portland Fire, the WNBA's first quadruple overtime game since Washington beat the Seattle Storm 72-69 on July 3, 2001. The Mystics have won four of their last six and are playing with a wealth of confidence.

WNBA Betting Prediction: Washington Mystics +6.5 (-104)

• Had the Mystics been playing immediately after the marathon with Portland, I'd be worried. But they've had time to recover. They've also covered four of their last six and are on a 3-0 ATS run as an underdog. This is also the team that won in Brooklyn and Minneapolis last month. The Dream, meanwhile, have failed to cover four straight.

Dallas Wings at Connecticut Sun

If the Wings came into this one playing well, I'd worry about them looking past the lowly Sun. But Dallas lost in Las Vegas and at home to the Lynx. And while they've had time to get over the losses, it's still seething for a team that was once in the top four of the standings. As one of the highest-scoring teams in the league, the Wings may surpass their 88.4 ppg scoring average.

Connecticut, meanwhile, might be the one team in the league that won't benefit from the Commissioner's Cup break. The last thing the Sun needed was to have their momentum stalled after winning two in a row behind a pair of staunch defensive performances. A 29-point win over Chicago and 11-point victory over Washington gave the Sun a boost, but the Wings are on a different tier.

WNBA Betting Prediction: Dallas Wings -7.5 (-106)

• Even after their wins over Chicago and Washington, the Sun are still the only team in the WNBA averaging less than 80 points per game. That won't bode well against the league's fifth-stingiest scoring defense, as the Wings are holding teams to 85.6 points per game. The Wings have lost two in a row only once this season, and they responded with a 92-69 demolition of the Mystics. Expect something similar tonight in Connecticut.

Seattle Storm at Phoenix Mercury

If there is one team that will be happy to get back to the court, it's the Mercury. A distraction from all the noise is exactly what the doctor ordered, and with Thomas returning to the lineup, this could get ugly real quick. Kahleah Copper has been on a tear the last six games, scoring at least 20 in five of them while averaging 26.5 ppg during the stretch. In 30 career games against the Sun, she's finished in double figures 21 times.

Like Connecticut, the Storm probably would have benefited from no Commissioner's Cup break, as they turned in three incredible performances in Seattle. They lost by two to Dallas, beat the Liberty by 11 and crushed the Dream by 15. To rekindle that on the road, against an angry Mercury team, is a difficult task.

WNBA Betting Prediction: Phoenix Mercury -3.5 (-115)

• The Mercury have won three straight in this series, including a 20-point thrashing in Phoenix on June 20. And when you consider the fact that Phoenix ranked 13th in the league with 80.8 ppg through June 11, but since then ranks sixth after averaging 91.3 in its last six games, it's easy to see how it could explode for triple figures tonight.

WNBA Bonus Bet for July 2

Alyssa Thomas to record a triple-double (+950) is enticing. During her career, she's averaged 12.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.6 assists in 30 games against Seattle. But how many of those games were during the Sue Bird-Breanna Stewart era? Of her 19 regular-season triple-doubles, she has two against Seattle (2023 and 2025). With all that's taken place the past week, The Engine could be tuned up and ready for a high-powered game.
