WNBA Best Bets (July 30): Lynx & Tempo, Sun & Sky, Liberty & Aces Odds & Predictions

Three games highlight tonight's card, including a potential WNBA Finals preview with two of the top teams in the league meeting for a third time this season. The New York Liberty won the first two meetings, beating the Aces in Las Vegas on June 23 (87-76), and winning the Commissioner's Cup in Brooklyn on June 30 (93-85). The game tips at 10:00 p.m. Eastern and will be broadcast on Prime.

Tipping the night off will be a rematch with the Minnesota Lynx visiting the Toronto Tempo after the teams met in Minneapolis on Tuesday. Accompanying the Lynx is an eight-game win streak, including Tuesday's 100-93 win. The game is the first of Prime's doubleheader and tips at 8:00 p.m. ET.

Also going at 8 p.m. is the Connecticut Sun visiting the Chicago Sky, the site of last weekend's All-Star festivities. Both are mired in minor losing skids, with the Sun on a three-game slide and Sky losers of two in a row. The game will be broadcast on League Pass.

Minnesota Lynx at Toronto Tempo

• Spread: Minnesota -12.5 (-110) | Toronto +12.5 (-110)

The Lynx opened the second half of the season with a 100-93 win over this same Tempo team, which, even though it is short-handed, showed plenty of grit on the road. Every game that Napheesa Collier is back, the tighter the chemistry will be among four veterans and a rookie sensation. There might not be a better starting five than Collier, Kayla McBride, Olivia Miles, Natasha Howard and Courtney Williams. The quintet scored 75 of the Lynx's 100 points on Tuesday.

The Tempo, who are believed to be in the market before the trade deadline, have lost four in a row and eight of nine since June 27. They're in 11th place, five games back of the eighth-place Washington Mystics, and if they want to get back into the playoff conversation, they need to start beating the top-tier teams. The problem is on defense, where they've allowed 100 or more in three straight games and in four of their last six.

My Best Bet Prediction: Toronto +12.5 (-110)

• This looks far too easy to play the Lynx against the downtrodden Tempo, and yet I'm not convinced the Lynx can be trusted laying double digits — especially on the road. Minnesota opened the season covering 11 of its first 13 games. But it's failed to cover 10 straight, while only one of their wins during the eight-game win streak has been by double digits. And seven of those games came against non-playoff teams. The scenery changes two nights after Toronto covered in Minneapolis, and yet we're still getting a big number. Take the dog.

Connecticut Sky at Chicago Sky

• Spread: Connecticut +4.5 (-105) | Chicago -4.5 (-115)

I don't know if the Connecticut Sun can be trusted with minutes, since they could very well be sellers at the deadline. If Connecticut does indeed intend to ship second-year sensation Aneesah Morrow to a playoff contender, the last thing it will want to do is risk an injury to a commodity. The team has lost three straight and is well out of the playoff race. It arrives in Chicago after Tuesday's 92-84 loss in D.C.

This is the Chicago Sky's first game out of the break, so their legs should be fresher. They closed the first half with close road losses in Atlanta and Brooklyn, losing by two and one, respectively. Chicago has been playing much better ball since Courtney Vandersloot made her season debut. Coach Tyler Marsh isn't the type to concede anything until the math is mathing and his team is officially eliminated. So, even though it will take a lot for this team to catch the pack, I expect the Sky to play as if their playoff lives were depending on it.

My Best Bet Prediction: Sky -4.5 (-115)

• Since June 26, the Sky are the second-highest scoring team in the league with 94.4 points per game. It was then that Vandersloot took the reins of the offense, which began running through Kamilla Cardoso. The teams met just before that, on June 22, and the Sun dominated in a 92-63 beatdown at home. On June 5, the Sky won in Chicago, 85-80. With Chicago riding a five-game ATS win streak and this being its first game out of the break, I'll lay the points.

New York Liberty at Las Vegas Aces

• Total: O/U 182.5 (-105/-115)

While A'ja Wilson registered a double-double (28/14) in Tuesday's win over the Portland Fire, the most impressive thing we may have seen from the defending champion Aces was their defense. The team showed its grit without NaLyssa Smith, while holding the Fire to 83 points on .397 shooting.

The Liberty are off a four-point win in Los Angeles, where they scored a season-high 113 points. Having beaten Las Vegas twice already, the Liberty know how dangerous this visit can be and must use their defensive prowess to limit Wilson's touches and control what guards Jackie Young and Jewell Loyd do on the perimeter. Fortunately for them, the Liberty rank seventh in the league in allowing teams to shoot a modest .451 from the floor.

My Best Bet Prediction: Under -182.5 (-115)

• While it's true that five of the last nine meetings have gone over the posted number, most of those higher-scoring games were in New York. The last three regular-season meetings in Las Vegas have stayed under. And of the 12 regular-season meetings in Las Vegas since the Aces franchise relocated from San Antonio, only one game has gone over 180 points. All 12 have averaged a final tally of 170.9 points per game. Expect a tight, low-scoring affair.
