WNBA Best Bets (June 28): Fire & Mystics, Aces & Sky, Liberty & Valkyries Odds & Picks

Four games highlight Sunday's WNBA card as the league gears up for some time off while the Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty prepare for Tuesday's Commissioners' Cup in Brooklyn. We get a tantalizing opener with Western Conference powers Minnesota and Dallas meeting in Texas for what should be an epic battle tipping at 2 p.m. Eastern.

The Portland Fire might be in 11th place, but they're just one game behind the eighth and final playoff spot and will look to gain some ground when they visit the ninth-place Washington Mystics for a 3 p.m. tip. The defending champion Aces visit an injury-plagued Chicago Sky squad for a 4 p.m. tip, and the slate wraps up with the Liberty in San Francisco to play the always dangerous Golden State Valkyries for a 7 p.m. tip.

Portland Fire at Washington Mystics

The verdict remains out for me with the Fire, who lost the first two of this road trip, both in Chicago, and have lost five of seven since opening the season 6-4. Portland, which has lost six of eight on the road, has failed to cover in six of its last nine games. Now the Fire will face what's been one of the best scoring defenses this month.

The Mystics are within grasp of being in the playoff picture, and might be in the mix if they hadn't lost their last two. Losing in Connecticut was a bit shocking, and it makes you wonder if whatever has been mystic with Washington has run out. Then again, it was an odd-scheduled trip after they played four on the road, went home for one, and back on the road for another.

• WNBA Betting Prediction: Washington Mystics -6.5 (-115)

I have to back the Mystics, as this is still the same team that went into Brooklyn and beat the Liberty by three, went to the Twin Cities and beat the Lynx by five, then came home and came close to beating Minnesota again, but lost by two. The Mystics have the fourth-best ATS mark in the league (9-7). Finally, let's point out the Mystics have the second-best scoring defense (79.8) since June 8.

Las Vegas Aces at Chicago Sky

The defending champs have won nine of 11 and arrive after a 15-point throttling of the upstart Dallas Wings, and make a pit stop in Chi-town before hitting the Big Apple for the Commissioners' Cup on Tuesday. The Aces also might get good news if Chennedy Carter is back in the lineup, as she's questionable for today's game in what would be her first game back in Chicago since playing for the Sky.

The problem for the Aces is that the Sky come in off two confidence-building wins over the Portland Fire, and they've also covered six of their last seven games. This is the same Chicago team that also suffered one-point losses to the Liberty and Wings (in Dallas).

• WNBA Betting Prediction: Under 180.5 (-108)

When all things point one way, I tend to shy away and look for a reason to go in the opposite direction. The Sky have gone over in two straight and five of six, so one would think, at home, they'll push the tempo. But the Aces have been focused on their defense, as coach Becky Hammon continues to preach it's the only way this team will win. The Aces have stayed under in four of their last five, and the over is on a 5-0 run in this series. Play this one low.

New York Liberty at Golden State Valkyries

The New York Liberty bring an end to their toughest road trip, to date, after losing in Los Angeles, winning in Las Vegas, and then losing a shocker in Seattle. They might have been better off going to San Francisco after their win over the Aces, as I believe they looked past the Storm. Now they're facing one of the best defenses in the league.

You have to be impressed with how Golden State responded from its losses to the Lynx (81-75) and the Aces (92-73) by sweeping the Atlanta Dream (77-66) on Wednesday and Friday (78-75). Those were two of the Dream's three lowest outputs offensively this season. It's hard not to believe the Valkyries won't be ready for the Liberty before taking a week off.

• WNBA Betting Prediction: Valkyries -1.5 (-110)

During its 6-2 run since June 9, Golden State is the only team in the WNBA that is holding teams to less than 80 points per game. I'm banking on that defense to stifle a weary Liberty squad that still has Satou Sabally in concussion protocol, and that has lost three of four and is playing its fourth road game in eight days.
