With three games on the board for Friday night, the highlight game might be taking place in Los Angeles, where the Sparks are hosting Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings. If only Kelsey Plum and Rae Burrell were healthy.
For me, I'm more intrigued to see how the Portland Fire will respond on a Friday night at home after recent success.

The Portland Fire have been one of the best storylines over the first month of the 2026 campaign, opening up with a 6-5 mark, including wins over the Indiana Fever and New York Liberty, twice. It's no wonder we have a near pick'em line Friday night in the Fire's home tilt against the Phoenix Mercury, last season's WNBA runner-up.
As Alex Sarama celebrates being named May's WNBA Coach of the Month, I've zeroed in on a few enticing player props for Friday. Here are my top three picks:
(Odds via FanDuel)
It's a Friday night in Portland, so the crowd should energize the home team for what is a winnable Commissioner's Cup game. While the Mercury might have been last season's runner-up, the start to 2026 has been disastrous. I know Phoenix just snapped a six-game skid on Wednesday with a 72-68 win in Seattle, but the Storm were massively short-handed.
Friday, they're facing a Portland team that ranked tied for seventh in the league with its 42.7 percent first-half shooting. More importantly, during a 5-2 run since May 23, the Fire rank fifth in allowing just 39.2 points per first half.
And during a 1-6 skid since May 19, the Mercury have the league's second-worst shooting percentage, a bleak 39.5 percent. In the second game of this quick two-game junket to the Northwest, they may come out flat against fiery Portland.
The Fire have gotten inspired play from Emily Engstler for much of the season, as she's scored in double figures in six of the team's 11 games. She's averaging 9.7 points per game this season, but she's scored an average of 12.6 points the last three games.
And over the last five home games, she's scoring 11.2 points per game.
It's hard to compare what Engstler is doing this season, in trying to lift the surprising expansion team, as she could finish with a career year, already averaging a career high 9.7 points per game. Against what's been one of the worst defenses in the league, I can see Engstler having a big night.
"The Engine" has the most triple-doubles in WNBA history with 25. Alyssa Thomas just doesn't have one this season, yet. And this might be the night to trust in Thomas to have her best night of the campaign. Thomas has three double-doubles, but after a relatively quiet night on Wednesday, with nine points and nine rebounds in a road in Seattle, it wouldn't be surprising to see the veteran tee off in Portland.
Thomas always plays with a purpose, but in this game, with the Mercury struggling early on this season, and the team coming off a much-needed win, she might feel compelled to teach the expansion team a lesson.
