Two games highlight the WNBA card for Monday, including a Western Conference showdown between the league's top teams, with the second-place Golden State Valkyries visiting the Minnesota Lynx. Five games separate the teams atop the standings, so a win by Minnesota could further distance it and move closer to the overall No. 1 seed. The game tips at 8 p.m. Eastern on USA Network.
The nightcap takes us to Los Angeles, where the Sparks will host the Atlanta Dream, who are still jockeying for a decent playoff seed. The Dream are in fourth place, 6.5 games back of the Lynx, and 1.5 behind the Valkyries. With a chance to make a late push for the No. 2 seed, Atlanta has ramped up its efforts since a mid-season lull, having won 11 of its last 14. The game tips at 10 p.m. on Peacock.

Olivia Miles is shooting 40.4% from beyond the arc, making 61-of-151 attempts through 36 games. That translates to 1.69 made 3-pointers on 4.2 attempts per game, which is approaching 2.0 per game, without taking into consideration her increasing late-season volume. She attempted six 3-pointers and made two against Washington in her latest game.
The Rookie of the Year frontrunner buried a rookie-record eight 3-pointers on 11 attempts in the first meeting with Golden State, then went 3-for-4 from deep while scoring 20 points in Minnesota’s 77-66 victory last Wednesday. That's 11-of-15 threes — a whopping 73.3% — across two matchups with the defensive-minded Valks. Courtney Williams' absence should also keep the ball in Miles' hands and protect her shot volume.
Miles has scored 20 or more points in eight of her last 10 games, averaging 21.7 during that stretch. She has also scored at least 19 in two of three meetings with Golden State. Those are efforts that are fueled by her capabilities of pulling up from behind the stripe and burying a 3-pointer at any time.
Angel Reese is averaging 2.7 assists for the season, but she has become a more consistent facilitator with Brionna Jones sidelined. Over three recent games against Indiana, Las Vegas and Los Angeles, Reese produced six, four and eight assists. That is 18 assists — an average of 6.0 per game — and would clear tonight's game with each previous tally.
Los Angeles is an ideal opponent for her expanded role. The Sparks surrender 22.7 assists per game, the second-highest figure in the WNBA. Over their last three games, that number has increased to a league-worst 24.7, with opponents assisting on 68.5% of their made baskets.
Atlanta demonstrated precisely how to exploit that weakness Thursday. The Dream recorded a franchise-record 35 assists on 46 made field goals — a massive 76.1% assisted-field-goal rate — in their 124-88 victory. Reese accounted for eight of those assists, or 22.9% of Atlanta’s total.
If you consider that Atlanta leads the league with 43.8 paint points per game, while Los Angeles allows 42.9 and permits opponents to shoot 63.5% from within eight feet, it forces the Sparks to send help toward Reese on post touches, rolls and offensive rebounds. And when the weak-side defender collapses, Reese can find Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray on the perimeter or cutters behind the rotating defense.
Gray has made 10 of 22 3-pointers across her last four games — a 45.5% conversion rate:
That is 2.5 makes on 5.5 attempts per game. At that recent percentage, Allisha Gray needs approximately 4.4 attempts for two successful makes. She has reached at least five attempts in three of those four games, and tonight faces one of the worst defenses in the league.
I know Gray made only one long-range jumper against Los Angeles last Thursday, but there's context to explain. Atlanta led by more than 30 and Gray played only 22:40, well below her usual workload, thus she attempted just two 3-pointers. She still converted one. In the earlier meeting with the Sparks, Gray went 3-for-6 from deep and scored 20 points. That's a 50% (4 of 8) across the two matchups.
Los Angeles ranks fifth in opponent 3-point attempts allowed, and Atlanta just shot 8-for-13 (61.5%) from beyond the arc against this defense. The Sparks' interior problems drive that vulnerability, as they allow 42.9 paint points per game and 63.5% shooting within eight feet. When defenders collapse toward Reese and Atlanta's cutters, Gray becomes a primary beneficiary on kick-outs and ball reversals.
If Gray receives her normal minutes and reaches five attempts, her recent 45.5% rate projects to 2.28 made threes. Over 1.5 is the proper side, despite a steep price for this line.
