The New York Liberty eyes for its seventh straight win when it hosts the Dallas Wings this Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at Barclays Center.
Winners of 10 of their past 11, New York punched its ticket into the playoffs following a 79-67 statement victory over old tormentors Las Vegas Aces on the road last Saturday.
Olympic gold medalists Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart spearheaded the Liberty’s offensive onslaught, combining for 41 points while versatile forward Jonquel Jones finished with 10 points and 17 rebounds.
The Liberty looks to make it 11 wins in their last 12 when they host the struggling Dallas Wings in a pair of games this week. Dallas is coming off a heartbreaking 109-91 loss to the Connecticut Sun last time despite a 20-point effort from the returning Satou Sabally.
Dallas will play New York once again this Thursday before hosting them in consecutive games next month. With this being the first of their four meetings, the excitement surrounding this matchup is clear and palpable with both teams among the league leaders in scoring.
As of press time, here’s how the current New York Liberty vs Dallas Wings betting lines stand.
New York Liberty Injury Report
Dallas Wings Injury Report
The New York Liberty heads into this game as the overwhelming favorites and for a good reason. They have won their past six games and have been virtually unbeatable at home this season.
With how both teams head into this game, playing the spread for the Liberty may offer an excellent value for punters.
However, for the Liberty to cover the spread, they must tighten their defensive screws, especially since they are playing a Wings team that has been scoring fun for this season.
Dallas is currently the sixth-best scoring team in the league at 82.3 points per game. Fortunately, for New York though, the Wings have been terrible at taking care of the ball this year, leading the league in turnovers at 15.6 per game.
Should New York be able get the usual numbers from those two and negate any offensive explosion from Wings scoring machine Arike Ogunbowale, backing them to cover the -14 spread is something worth considering.
To say that the Dallas Wings have been terrible this season is an understatement. Despite an excellent season from Arike Ogunbowale, the Wings have found themselves in the bottom and a lot of that has to do with the injuries to its key players.
Young Wings forward Maddy Siegrist remains day-to-day heading into this game while Satou Sabally has missed the first 25 games for the Wings this year.
However, Wings coach Latricia Trammell can take solace in the fact that Sabally had an excellent game in her return.
Despite the current state of affairs in the Wings camp, the 27-year old Ogunbowale has been having her best season since the pandemic, averaging just above 22 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
One thing that the Wings have to do to have a better chance of covering against New York is cutting down their turnovers. Dallas turned the ball over 20 times against the Connecticut Sun last week, which would be suicide on the road against the Liberty.
Should the Wings learn to take care of the ball and get solid games from their key players, leaning towards them to cover the +14 spread at these current odds is not far-fetched.
While Satou Sabally’s return is certainly good news for the Dallas Wings, the New York Liberty is just too hot right now. New York did not only win six straight but they have also managed to cover the spread in those games.
Other than that, I also like the over 174 points total in this game. The Liberty and the Wings rank second and sixth in the league in scoring. It is worth noting that the over hit in their past five meetings.
