Pool B of the World Baseball Classic should be there for the taking by Team USA. However, halfway through pool play, there are three undefeated teams, all at 2-0, crammed together at the top. The marquee game tonight will headline USA and Mexico.

Two of those national teams will meet tonight when the United States faces Mexico at Daikin Park in Houston. The winner will clinch a spot in the semifinals. The loser will need to beat Italy later this week to get into the semis.
The Americans are pitching one of their two prime aces, Paul Skenes, the 2025 National League Cy Young Award winner. Skenes will have a chance to rack up K's against the free-swinging Mexican lineup, which is led by Jarren Duran, Randy Arozarena, and Alejandro Kirk. On Sunday, Team Mexico scored 14 runs in a romp over Brazil.

The Americans have pounded enemy pitching in this series, but surprisingly, the home run has not been the team's primary weapon.
In two WBC games, the USA has scored 24 runs. But only four have come from homers. Team USA has 16 singles, four doubles, and just two home runs in its two wins. The secret sauce? Bases on balls. The USA has drawn 24(!) walks in two games.
As an old-school manager once said about free passes, "Oh, those bases on balls..."
If Mexico doesn't throw strikes, USA will lay off bad pitches, clog the bases, and pepper away with singles and doubles. Eventually, one of their sluggers will go over the fence. That's a recipe for a loss.
Mexico counters with excellent pitching and defense. In two games, zero errors and only two earned runs allowed. The pitching staff has walked eight batters.
The key to the Mexico vs. USA matchup is whether Mexico's pitchers can throw pitches in the zone and get outs. So far, opponents have been fearful of challenging the USA lineup with strikes. Mexico will have to in order to get past their northern neighbors.
Here are my two bets, one player prop and one game prop for the USA/MEX game. Odds are from FanDuel:
WBC Betting Explainer:
Mexico can keep the score down as long as its pitching staff is able to get the ball on the ground and avoid free passes. I expect Team USA will win, but I expect a score much more like 6-3 than 12-2.
Skenes is baseball's most dominant pitcher. He will be amped up when he toes the rubber in his home country in his WBC debut. The fastball will reach 100, and Team Mexico will have difficulty putting the baseball in play. Expect Skenes to go 3-4 innings.
Another battle of unbeatens is taking place in Pool A between Cuba (2-0) and Puerto Rico (2-0). These teams have a rivalry that goes back decades, predating the WBC.
The winner here will essentially clinch a trip to the semifinals. The Cubans have the better lineup: four batters have smacked a home run already in the 2026 WBC for Team Cuba. Puerto Rico has surrendered just three runs in its two games, with only two earned.
This is pitching vs power, with Team PR having the mound edge. I like the matchup of the pesky Puerto Rican lineup against Julio Robaina, the Cuban starter. Robaina has a nice knee-high heater, and like all Astros' pitchers, he features a sweeper/slider. However, the Cuban sometimes has no idea where his pitches are going. If he falls behind the count (and I believe he will), the Puerto Rican lineup can punish him.
