The Houston Astros have now won four out of their last five games and are on the verge of sweeping the Los Angeles Angels after back-to-back dominant wins. They have now outscored the Angles 13-2 during their 2-game winning streak as the Angels' struggles at the plate continue as they look to avoid the sweep come Sunday afternoon.
The Astros will be looking to continue their dominance in their recent matchups and gain some ground on the first-place Seattle Mariners as they start game as they look to finish out this 3-game series with the Los Angeles Angels. With that said, we take a look at this matchup to make an Astros-Angels prediction and pick.
Houston Astros (29-35)Β sit in third place in the AL West 5.5 games behind the first-place Seattle Mariners. On the heels of some great pitching and great hitting the Astros have now won four out of their last five games while taking two of three from the St. Louis Cardinals and on the verge of sweeping the bottom-feeding Los Angeles Angels.
The Astros did not start the season off on the right foot but as we are a month away from the All-Star Break they are starting to gain some momentum. The Astros bats have been doing great work at the plate which is their reason for this little hot streak of theirs.
The Astros have also been getting very good production out of their pitching staff as well. Their starters have a 3.14 ERA while limiting the opposition to just a .198 batting average over their last 5 games.
Verlander may be coming off a rough outing in his last matchup against the Cardinals giving up 7 hits, 4 Earned Runs with 3 home runs but in three of his four starts before that, he gave 1 Earned Run or less.
Opposite Verlander will be Patrick Sandoval taking the mound for the Angels who doesn't have the best track record against the Astros. Sandoval has given up a .310 batting average with 12 extra-base hits and 4 home runs against this Astros lineup for his career.
If the Astros can keep this momentum going they should be able to get after Patrick Sandoval early and how their relievers have been pitching in recent games they should be able to hold the lead and get out of Los Angeles with the sweep.
Los Angeles Angels (24-39) are sitting dead last in the American League West and a whopping 11 games behind the division-leading Seattle Mariners who seem to be pulling away at the moment winning 6 out of their last 10 games with 5 games up on the second-place Texas Rangers.
Nonetheless, the Angels come into this matchup looking to gain some confidence after losing 7 out of their last 10 games and back-to-back losses against their divisional rivals
The Angels have been a disaster this season and their recent stretch of games doesn't seem like there is light at the end of the tunnel anytime soon. They have been struggling not only to generate runs but also to keep runs off the scoreboard against them.
However, luckily for them, they send Patrick Sandoval to the mound who has been solid for the Angels. Despite his 2-8 record, Sandoval has pitched well over his last 5 games with a 3.20 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 26 strikeouts in 27.2 innings going at least 6 innings in four of those five games.
Anderson also has a good track record against the parts of this Houston Astros lineup"
It'll be up to Sandoval to limit the damage from the bats of the Houston Astros as well as the Angels to give him some much-needed run support as they play host to the visiting Astros in this Sunday afternoon matchup.
The Houston Astros are looking to finish out this series with a sweep of the Los Angeles Angels meanwhile, the Angels are looking to stop the bleeding and finally get on the winning side of things when they play host to the Astros in this Sunday afternoon showdown.
Both teams send surging pitchers Justin Verlander and Patrick Sandoval to the mound who have been pitching well as of late.
All signs point to this matchup being a pitcher's duel with runs being very limited.
With that said, the Astros have a good track record against Patrick Sandoval and they are getting hot at the right time and should finish out this series with a sweep of the Los Angeles Angels.
