On Friday evening in Seattle, Tarik Skubal (2.21 ERA, 2.45 FIP) will start for the Tigers. The Mariners will hand the ball to George Kirby (4.21 ERA, 3.37 FIP).

For the second consecutive season, Detroit ace Tarik Skubal will start a deciding Game 5 of the American League Division Series

Last October it was against the Guardians. In that assignment, the beefy lefthander pitched six innings and allowed five earned runs, four of them on a grand slam.

Skubal is seeking to change his fortune: he's made three starts against Seattle in 2025, and the Tigers have lost each game. That includes Sunday when the M's defeated the southpaw in Game 2 in this same ballpark.

Are all the innings and 98 mph+ pitches putting a toll on Skubal?

His performance in Game 5 will start to answer that question.

I say here that the soon-to-be two-time Cy Young Award winner will be in excellent form tonight in the Pacific Northwest. Sure, the Seattle lineup is getting its second look at Skubal. But, as they say "Be careful what you wish for."

My first betting pick is all Skubal:

A strikeout player prop bet for the man who has struck out more batters the last two seasons than any pitcher in MLB.

  I will lay down $172 to win $100 if Skubal records at least nine strikeouts. The Detroit pitcher has recorded at least nine K's in three of his last four starts. He has 23 K's in 14 2/3 postseason innings in 2025.

The award winner on the other side of this game is the Seattle catcher. Cal Raleigh may win the Most Valuable Player award. Or he may finish second to Aaron Judge. Either way, it's almost certain he will garner a Gold Glove. And it's a lock that Raleigh will win his first Silver Slugger award.

So far this series, Raleigh is 7-for-16 with a home run

He's recorded at least one hit in each of the four games. Right, left, it doesn't matter what type of pitching he faces, the "Big Dumper" is getting his hits in the ALDS.

On Friday night back at home, Raleigh is a great pick to record at least one hit. He was 0-for-3 against Skubal in Game 2.
