Sports wagering is supposed to be a fun endeavor, bringing interactive engagement and hopefully a few more bucks in your pocket. When that entertaining experience crosses a line, those consequences must be dealt with, otherwise, it will keep happening again and again.
One company is doing just that.
New Jersey-based BetMGM announced Monday they will be updating its terms of service to prohibit any kind of athlete harassment.
If a BetMGM customer exhibits such behavior, the company will suspend their account if it is found that individual has used harassing or abusive language toward athletes, coaches, or team or league personnel.

“We are unwavering in our commitment to sports integrity — and that commitment extends to safeguarding athletes, coaches and league personnel,” said Rhea Loney, BetMGM’s Chief Compliance Officer in a news release. “Our legal, regulated environment enables us to identify misconduct, investigate reports, and take action when necessary. Any confirmed instance of harassment will result in decisive measures, including account suspension.”
Previous terms did allow for account suspension for any lawful reason, including harassment. The update announced today is providing more clarity around the policy and reinforces BetMGM's commitment to sports integrity and player safety. Updates to the terms of service are subject to regulatory approval.
"There was not one thing that was the impetus; rather, a series of events affecting the industry - and as a legal, online, regulated operator that puts a significant emphasis on responsible gambling and integrity, we wanted to be crystal clear in laying out the consequences of this type of behavior. This differentiates us from illegal, unregulated entities that do not have such protections - and do not have systems in place to flag issues," said a BetMGM spokesperson to BallIsLife.com late Monday evening.
Currently, BetMGM operates in 30 markets with mobile and retail offerings.
