The Bay State's sports wagering sector saw decreases in the first month of the new year.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) announced official figures for January 2026 on Friday with the state's total sports betting handle coming in at $808.9 million (10.43% hold), a $36.4 million decline from $845.3 million in December 2025.
However, January's handle is $46.27 million more than Jan. 2025.
January's handle comes in third for the month among states that have reported their official monthly figures. New York tops the monthly list with $2.45 billion, followed by neighbor New Jersey at $1.03 billion. Massachusetts is in the middle of the top five with Pennsylvania fourth ($782.4 million) and North Carolina fifth ($686.9 million).

Taxable sports wagering revenue (TSWR) also saw a decrease, generating $82.4 million for the month, a $16.1 million drop from December's record-breaking revenue of $98.5 million.
Massachusetts has seven mobile/online sports wagering licensees, along with three retail (Plainridge Park Casino, MGM Springfield, and Encore Boston Harbor).
Boston-based DraftKings led the way online for the month with more than $418.27 million in handle (52.4% of the market), followed by FanDuel ($199.65 million) and Fanatics Sportsbook ($62.48 million).
To date, the Commonwealth has collected approx. $408.41 million in total taxes and assessments from licensed sports wagering operators since sports wagering began with retail on Jan. 31, 2023, and online less than two months later on March 10.
