
The Great Lake State saw a decrease in both iGaming and sports betting as official September figures were released Monday, Oct. 20 by the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB).
Both reported a combined total of $302.7 million in gross receipts from internet gaming (iGaming) and internet sports betting for the month, reflecting a 3.1% decrease from August.
Online sports wagering handle generated $524.3 million in September, a significant 54.7% increase from $338.9 million generated in August. Gross sports betting receipts were $43.6 million, down $5.67 million from $49.27 million recorded in August.
September's handle was the largest of the year thus far, surpassing more than $524.34 million in January. Currently, Michigan stands seventh in sports betting handle among the top 10 states in September, just behind Tennessee ($565.3 million) and just ahead of Indiana ($531.8 million).
September Taxes
Combined Adjusted Gross Receipts (AGR) for iGaming and online sports betting reached $256.6 million in September ($243.4 million from iGaming, $13.2 million from online sports betting). The total was a slight 1.5% decrease in iGaming AGR and a huge 61.3% decrease in sports betting AGR compared to August.
Year-over-year, iGaming AGR rose 33.5%, while sports betting decreased by 52.0% compared to Sept. 2024.
The state received $768,038 in online sports betting taxes and fees, while raking in more than $50.8 million in iGaming.
Detroit’s three commercial casinos reported over $13.4 million in wagering taxes and municipal services fees paid to the City of Detroit for the month ($134 million in iGaming taxes and fees, while sports betting brought in $375,738).
As of last month, 15 commercial and tribal operators have been authorized to offer iGaming and/or internet sports betting in the state (11 offer online sports betting, and 14 offer iGaming.).

With the Detroit Red Wings off to a hot 5-1 start in the NHL, the NBA's Detroit Pistons will tip off their 82-game regular season this week on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the Chicago Bulls at 8 p.m. ET.
