Skillz is a unique online gaming platform which features a number of esports-style games. I’ve been steadily working my way through all of them, from virtual fishing to simulated hunting, and I’m very excited to tell you all about it.
In this guide you’ll discover more about Skillz esports and what’s on offer. I’ll tell you how to get started, and take you through some Skillz features. I’ll also pick out a handful of my favorite games, in case you can’t decide where to get started.
Skillz was founded in 2012 by Andrew Paradise, an esports specialist looking to build a platform that allowed players to compete in mobile game tournaments.
As a result, esports type games are a popular choice for players at Skillz. In total, Skillz features over 500 different games that range from virtual versions of football, basketball, and golf, to arcade style skeeball, bowling, and cornhole.
One of the main reasons that I love playing esports at Skillz is the easy set-up. To start things off you’ll navigate to the Skillz mobile site and pick out the game you want to try. Hit ‘Get’ to be taken to the appropriate Skillz mobile app for your device, and then ‘Confirm’ to install it to your phone or tablet.
When you open the game you’ll be prompted to pick out a name and avatar, or these can be automatically selected if you’d prefer to try the game out before you commit to making an account. Once you’ve done this, you can play a few practice rounds for free, or head straight to a match up against another player.
When I took a few esport games for a spin at Skillz, I decided to fund my account to be able to accurately test out every aspect of playing. You can make deposits to your account using PayPal, Apple Pay, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express and, if you do, I’d recommend you look out for possible bonuses on your deposit, such as the recent Skillz $100 promo.
Real money play isn’t available in certain states, including Louisiana, and South Dakota. Skillz players living in those states will instead use the free Z Coins and Ticketz currency. Z Coins act as game tokens but don’t have any other value, while Ticketz can be redeemed for lots of awesome real world prizes like cash, gift cards, gym equipment, tech, and gadgets. Have a look at the Ballislife detailed Skillz review for more information on the legalities of playing Skillz games in your location.
If you’re playing the real money version of any esports games, it’s good to know that the entry prices vary by individual game. The minimum entry fee is $0.60.
Top tip: It can take a second to get your head around the Skillz esports charges and prizes for each game. For example, one of the esports games I played had an entry fee of $0.60 with a prize of $1. When I scooped the win, my balance only actually went up by $0.40 because I had already paid out the $0.60.
Skillz uses a complex match up process to guarantee that you’re only playing games against competition of a similar skill level. This should mean that you get a nicely competitive game but don’t have to face getting annihilated every time you play, or in fact getting bored because you always win.
All Skillz esport games come with a selection of special features that make the playing experience even better:
Practice rounds | Every game gives you a lot of opportunities to develop your skills in free practice rounds, playing with Z Coins. This gives you lots of training if you then decide to progress onto real money gaming. |
Cash matches | Cash matches means that the game is available to play for real money (as long as this option is possible in your region). These are called ‘Pro’ matches on Skillz. |
Free matches | The free match symbol means that the game can be played for free using Z Coins. That’s great if you want to practice before switching to bonus cash for the chance to win real money, or if you’re playing in a state where real money gaming isn’t currently allowed. |
Progression rewards | Progression rewards let you build up your status the more you play and the more skilled you become. The higher you climb up the leaderboard, the better your prizes will be. |
Player chat | The player chat is a great little feature that lets you share hints and tips with other members. |
Live events | Some games give you the chance to compete in live matches. They‘re time limited so have all of the thrill of a real match, and deliver exciting prizes. |
Vs matches | Challenge your pals, or your bitterest rivals, to a direct head to head match up for a guts and glory game. |
If you typed ‘What is Skillz esports?’ into Google then you’d get a lot of hits. There are hundreds of games to choose from, covering virtual sports as well as shooting, fishing, and arcade games. I’m not a big soccer, basketball, sporty kind of guy so I was very happy to see lots of options not based exclusively around sports. Some of my Skillz highlight games are:
This so-called ‘simple to play, hard to master’ game has been a player favorite outside of Skillz for 20 years. The graphics are immersive and there are lots of special upgrades to unlock as you play. There are even seasonal versions of the game, like a Halloween edition with zombie deer. When I tell you this game has an average rating of 4.7 from Apple players and 4.5 from Android users, beating even the well-loved Skillz Solitaire Cube, you’ll understand just how many people have fallen for this game.
This fast paced game gives you two minutes to try and toss as many bags into the hole as you can. The super simple, touch screen gameplay is enhanced with engaging game sounds and lots of different background settings to choose between.
If you prefer a fishing reel to a slot game reel then you’ll love Fishing Tap Blitz. This energetic game gives you the chance to catch up to 100 different types of fish and look them up in the game encyclopedia.
Made in conjunction with US bowling giant Bowlero, this game gives you one of the most realistic bowling simulations you’ll ever find. There are lots of different designs and lanes and the game design has been perfectly optimized to fit your phone screen. Again, I was impressed, but not surprised after I’d played a few rounds for myself, that this game has a nearly perfect score (4.7 out of 5) from over 10, 000 reviews.
Skillz are well-known for their new spins on old classics, like the Skillz Spades Cash game, and 7 Pin Pool is another great mash up, mixing some elements of old-fashioned billiard with a few spicy new additions. For starters, each game only lasts 10 minutes maximum so if you can’t make your shot by then you’re out of luck.
Secondly, everyone plays simultaneously. So there’s no waiting while a player chalks up their cue or lines up for the perfect angle, this is a no holds barred race against the clock to beat the competition.
It’s been a pleasure to guide you through the invigorating world of Skillz esports. Offering players something a little bit different to the usual table games or slots, these games are all easy to pick up but challenging to master, providing the potential for hours of fun.
I was particularly impressed that there are so many esports games more related to hobbies or pastimes. I could hunt, fish, shoot, and bowl to my heart’s content, all from the comfort of an app. The chance to get more rewards as you improve your skills means that play is always dynamic too, while daily reload bonuses kept me regularly topped up with free play tokens. The chance to redeem real world prizes is the cherry on top, and gives players in certain areas the chance to work towards real prizes, from cash to gift cards.
Skillz players will use 3 types of currency to play esports games at Skillz - bonus cash, Coinz, and Ticketz. Ticketz can be redeemed for real prizes including gift cards, cash, and Skillz merchandise. Players in eligible states which allow real money plating can also use bonus cash to enter real money games.
The Skillz esports gaming library is home to around 60 specifically designated esports games. Whatever you like, whether it’s fishing, shooting, football or bowling, you’re pretty much guaranteed to find a game you’ll love, and that’s a promise.
At the moment, Skillz doesn't have a special sign up bonus for new players (but this does change so make sure to check back with Ballislife soon). Instead they give members plenty of chances to build up rewards including daily top ups of free Z Coins, a Refer a Friend bonus, and a VIP Club, all available without a Skillz promo code.
Once your deposit has been used to enter a cash match, it becomes non-refundable. However, any funds that you haven’t used can be withdrawn using the original method of payment. If you face any issues, you can always contact the customer help team at Skillz.
