How to play sweepstakes casino games using sweeps coins mode

The 4 disadvantages of playing at sweepstakes casinos
There are plenty of perks that come with sweeps cash casinos, including the ability to play for free and legal availability in most US states. However, there are some more negative aspects to consider before making your decision to play at a sweepstakes casino, instead of a real money casino.
1. Less diversity of games
Sweepstakes casinos don’t offer the same range of games as real money casinos. While real money casinos will nearly always have a strong live dealer and table games section from brands like Evolution Gaming, this is not popular at sweeps casinos.
In fact, only a handful of sweeps casinos like Stake.us offer them, and usually from one provider like ICONIC21. Slots are a lot more represented, but you will likely find hundreds of slots, as opposed to thousands of them at real money casinos.
Real money casinos need to have a state license to operate in each state they want to operate in. This means that a regulator such as the
Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE)
in New Jersey oversees all gambling activity and can crack down on illegalities and fraud in New Jersey.
While sweepstakes casinos are legal, they do not need a license to operate and there’s no central regulatory authority that oversees state or national gambling. This means that if you have any disputes, such as not receiving your real money prizes, etc., you are not going to be as legally protected as you normally would be.
3 Reduced Customer Support
Sweepstakes casinos are not as keen on customer support as real money casinos. You will always find customer support, and good brands offer 24/7 support.
However, plenty of other sweepstakes casinos, such as Chanced.com, limit their support to a few hours a day or do not offer live chat. We’ve had to send emails and wait 24 hours more times than we’d like to count.
Although we see an average redemption time of 3 days when reviewing the top sweepstakes brands, several brands take up to 10 days to complete redemption. This is slower compared to the 24-48 hours withdrawal time you’d expect from a real money casino.
Are sweepstakes casinos considered legal in the US?
Sweeps coins casinos are legal in 46 states because they are considered to not offer real money wagering since you're playing with sweeps coins currency instead of US Dollars. They fall under slightly different laws than gambling and allow you to pick up free sweeps coins without depositing them throughout your sweepstakes casino journey.
There are also marketing rules and laws that apply to sweepstakes in general, such as the

Where it clearly states that
”(a) It is unlawful for any person to use the term "prize" or "gift" or other similar term in any manner that would be untrue or misleading, including, but not limited to, the manner made unlawful in subdivision (b) or (c).”
Restrictions on Prize Redemptions
Other restrictions including on the maximum amount of prize redemptions in states like New York and Florida. Since these states would require the sweepstakes casino to register the promotion if the prize exceeds $5000, casinos cap the maximum prize for NY and FL to $4999.
Unlike real money alternatives, sweepstakes casinos must also make sure:
- All prizes are identifiable before entry
- All competitions have a clear end date
- Onsite purchases do not enhance your chances of winning
So, what states don't allow sweepstakes casinos?
Currently, there are 8 states that straight out forbid sweepstakes casinos:
❌ Idaho
- Idaho allows Gold Coin play, but forbids cash prizes. This means that players in Idaho can access social casinos, but not sweeps casinos with real money prizes.
❌ Washington
- Washington was the first state to explicitly ban sweeps casinos in the state.
❌ Michigan
- In late 2023, Michigan sent a bunch of cease-and-desist letters to prominent sweepstakes casinos. This caused sweepstakes casinos to stop operations in the state.
❌ Montana
- Montana was one of the states with a 2025 anti-sweeps bill. It was passed into law and came into effect on October 1st, 2025.
❌ Connecticut
- Connecticut followed in Montana's footsteps and banned sweepstakes casinos from operating in the state. Like Montana, it officially came into effect at the start of October.
❌ New Jersey
- This state is a very recent addition to the list, with a bill signed into law in August 2025. This law now bans sweeps casinos (and social betting sites) from operating in the state.
❌ California
- This is the one of the latest state to ban sweepstakes casinos in the state, and has taken effect in January 2026.
❌ New York - Rounding up the list is the Empire State, which banned sweepstakes casinos in December 2025. It was the last state to ban sweeps casinos in the year 2025.
However, there are other states that are pushing to ban sweepstakes casinos as well. For example, both Indiana and Maine have an anti-sweeps bill lined up.

What is the legal age for sweepstakes casinos?

March 11, 2026: MLGCA backs Maryland's sweeps casino crackdown
Sens. Jeff Waldstreicher and Chris West, backed by the MLGCA, gave a speech in front of Maryland lawmakers on Senate Bill 652, which would provide the MLGCA with more authority for cease-and-desist orders, injuctions, and fines.
Though no legal action was taken, this is against a backdrop where 89 cease-and-desist letters have already been issued to gambling operators in the state.
March 6, 2026: Updates on Maine's sweeps casino bill
Maine's LD2007 bill is now making its way to the full Senate, as committee members were unable to reach a consensus decision on Legislative Document 2007, an anti-sweeps bill.
11 members were in support of passing the bill, but 2 remained opposed, which may be an indicator of future outcomes.
March 6, 2026: New updates on Virginia's two iGaming bills, fate of sweeps casinos up in the air
Virginia's two legislation proposals for iGaming (SB 188
and
HB 161) have been postponed until 2028. However, due to wording disagreements, three members from each chamber will now hold a conference committee to decide the fate of these bills.
The aim of the conference committee is to find a compromise between the bills with a reconciled SB118 bill. If this is reached, the legislation will be passed.
2028 is still the earliest that legal action could come into effect, so sweeps casinos in Virginia are unaffected for now.
March 5, 2026: Senate Bill 1580 clears Florida's third Committee
Senate Bill 1580, which tackles a range of online gambling issues, has cleared its third committee meeting in Florida.
The bill will redefine what constitutes 'online gambling', and may have implications for sweeps casinos.
There is about a week left for the bill to proceed further, because 2026's session ends on March 13th.
March 5, 2026: The first failure of an anti-sweeps bill has occurred in Mississippi
Mississippi’s Senate Bill 2104 has failed to be passed in this year's session.
The bill sought to widen restrictions on online sweeps casinos with fines of up to $100,000 and possible jail time.
Most sweepstakes casino brands are currently operating in Mississippi, and won't be affected by possible forced closure this year.
March 5, 2026: Big-name sweeps operators are being sued by the City of Baltimore
Baltimore is suing some popular sweeps operators in a major lawsuit that claims they run gambling-style games under the mask of sweepstakes, which is illegal in Maryland.
Brands in the lawsuit include: Yellow Social Interactive (Pulsz), Sweepsteaks Limited (Stake.us), High 5 Entertainment, Blazesoft (Zula), B2Services OÜ (McLuck, Jackpota), and VGW (Chumba, Luckyland Slots).
The lawsuit seeks $1,000 per offence, restitution for residents, and further injuctions.
March 4, 2026: Sweepstakes casinos brands are leaving Indiana ahead of sweeps ban
Brands like Pulsz (Pulsz Casino and Pulsz Bingo) and B2Services OÜ (McLuck, SpinBlitz, Hello Millions, Jackpota) have ceased operations in Indiana before
HB1052
comes into official law.
The bill is still awaiting presentation to the Governor.
March 4, 2026: Tennessee and Oklahoma have passed anti-sweeps bills
Senates have passed anti-sweeps bills in two states today: Senate Bill 2136 in Tennessee and HB 4130 in Oklahoma.
These proposals would fully ban the operation of sweepstakes casinos. In the case of Tennessee, many brands like High 5 and Mega Bonanza had already pulled out from the state last year after receiving cease-and-desist letters.
The bills are now heading to the House in each state for further approval.
March 2, 2026: Louisiana proposes second anti-sweepstakes law
House Bill 883 is Louisiana's second bill addressing sweepstakes casinos after the proposal of Senate Bill 181 in 2025.
Last year, the bill was vetoed by Jeff Landry, who claimed that the state already has anti-sweeps legislation in place. Following this, cease-and-desist letters were sent to many sweeps casinos. So why another bill now?
It seems the state wants to really crank down on.

February 27, 2026: Indiana is close to banning sweepstakes casinos
Indiana's HB1052
is now approved by both the House and Senate. All that is left is sending the proposal to Governor Mike Braun for his final signature.
If signed by the Governor, Indiana will be the first state to ban sweepstakes casinos in 2026. The Bill indicates an implementation date of July 1,2026, which gives sweeps casinos the leeway of a few months to exit the Indiana market.
February 26, 2026: Virginia's two iGaming bills have been postponed until 2028
Virginia's two legislation proposals for iGaming (SB 188
and
HB 161), which include sweepstakes, have been consolidated into one bill with a reenactment clause. This is good news, but it does mean they can't go any further until at least 2028.
February 24, 2026: Anti-sweeps bill HB 1052 has been passed in Indiana
Following the pause on bill

in Indiana, which we reported on previously, it has now been passed.
Next, the bill goes to Governor Mike Braun for a signature approval. He may sign, veto, or choose to make it law even without a signature, so time will tell.
February 27 is the final day to pass bills before adjournment.
February 19, 2026: The wording of the anti-sweeps bill in Indiana has been disagreed on by the House and the Senate
HB 1052
in Indiana, which would see sweepstakes casinos banned in the state, originally passed the House, but after the Senate passed it with amendments, the House has rejected the changes.
The bill cannot go any further until the wording of it is agreed upon, and the current Indiana session ends on February 27th, so time is ticking.
February 18, 2026: Two bills advance in the Virginia House and Senate that could see Sweepstakes Casinos banned
The iGaming bills,
SB 188
and
HB 161, have passed the voting stage.
Both bills aim to introduce regulated online casino gambling in Virginia while outlawing non-regulated formats, such as sweepstakes casinos.
The final proposal has not yet been sent to the Governor for approval.
February 11, 2026: Lawmakers in Louisiana propose a new bill that would introduce harsher penalties for Sweeps Casinos
The bill

would see “gambling by electronic sweepstakes device” added to the list of violations that could become punishable under Louisiana racketeering laws, which are much harsher.
It is still in the very early stages and is unlikely to be heard or voted on in session until after March.
February 11, 2026: New proposed bills in Iowa would allow the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (IRGC) to issue cease-and-desists
The state of Iowa is currently considering two companion bills - Senate Study
Bill 3040
and House Study
Bill 586
- that, if passed, would expand the IRGC’s power.
This would allow them to formally issue C&D orders to sweepstakes casinos operating in the state.
Currently, both proposals have been introduced and heard in the committee, although voting is still a while away.
February 11, 2026: Oklahoma joins the line-up of states considering anti-sweepstakes bills
The state’s first ever anti-sweepstakes proposal,
Senate Bill 1589, is relatively compact, but would render the dual-currency system used by most sweepstakes casinos as illegal in Oklahoma.
Currently, the Bill is with the Senate Business and Insurance Committee and is awaiting a committee vote.
February 6, 2026: The Illinois Gaming Board has sent cease-and-desist letters to 65 operators
Sent out in collaboration with the State of Illinois’ Attorney General, the IGB has served cease-and-desist letters to a plethora of operators, including well-known brands such as Megabonanza and Crown Coins.
The letters come as a result of the Board ruling that these sweepstakes operators are running “illegal online casino and online sweepstakes gaming platforms”.
February 2, 2026: Indiana Sweepstakes Casino Ban Passes the House
Indiana is one step closer to banning sweepstakes casinos after
HB 1052
passed the House on the 2nd of February with an 87-11 vote.
This Bill has now passed to the Senate. If eventually approved, the Bill would ban online sweepstakes casinos in Indiana.
Legal Updates in January 2026
January 26, 2026: Tennessee Introduces Anti-Sweepstakes Bill
Tennessee has introduced Bill
HB 1885
which aims to outlaw sweepstakes casinos in the state.
This is a few weeks after some major brands pulled out of the state, including High 5, Chumba, and Mega Bonanza, after receiving cease and desist letters.
If approved, this would lead to an exit for all sweepstakes brands in the state of Tennessee.
January 15, 2026: New Jersey Introduces Bill to Regulate Sweeps Casinos
New Jersey has already outrightly banned sweepstakes casinos from operating in the state, thanks to the
AB 5447 Bill
which passed in 2025.
As of January 2026, there is the introduction of a new bill
SB 1500
that explores a reclassification of sweepstakes casinos. Instead of being banned, sweeps casinos would be re-introduced in the state as licensed, but they would need to meet the same regulatory requirements as their real-money counterparts.
If the bill passes into law, NJ sweeps casinos would be regulated and enforced by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement.
January 14, 2026: Maryland Proposes Anti-Sweepstakes Bills
Maryland has introduced two anti-sweeps casino bills:

SB 112.
Both these bills had the first reading on January 14th 2026, so the bills are some time away from potentially being passed into law.
This is not the first time that Maryland tried to pass anti-sweeps bills, with 2025 seeing SB 860 and HB 1140 failing to move forward.
January 5, 2026: Tennessee Cracks Down on Over 40 Sweepstakes Operators
The end of 2025 / beginning of 2026 saw Tennessee's Attorney General sending over 40 cease-and-desist letters.
This has caused a lot of operators to pull out or consider pulling out, including big names like Chumba, Modo, McLuck, and High 5 Casino.
January 1, 2026: California's Sweeps Ban Officially Comes into Effect
Sweepstakes casinos are officially banned in the state of California after Governor Gavin Newsom signed
Bill AB831
into law.
Although the signing happened on October 11th, the official ban came into effect on the 1st of January 2026. The majority of the sweeps brands had already pulled out ahead of the January deadline, but some like Global Poker left till the very end (December 30) to pull out.
California players can now only access free social casinos (with no real money prizes) as an alternative.

December 10, 2025: Indiana Introduces Anti-Sweepstakes Bill
House Bill 1052
has received its first reading and will now pass to the Committee on Public Policy. This Bill is covering sweepstakes casinos alongside others like horse betting, sports betting, and sale of tobacco and alcohol.
