History of the New Dunk that’s taking over Dunk Contests: Dunking over a person standing on a chair

Players in this post:
Scottie Pippen John Wall

John Wall introduced the reverse dunk over a person to the masses during the 2014 dunk contest.  I say masses because dunk fanatics have known about the dunk for years.

“It was only my second time doing it,” Wall said after being voted Dunker of the Night by fans. “My first time was on Thursday. So I just felt comfortable with myself and I knew it was a dunk that hasn’t been done before. And I knew it was the main thing coming up with the creativity, and it worked out in my favor. Someone sent me a YouTube link on my Twitter that said, ’27 dunks that haven’t been done in the NBA dunk contest.’ And the first one was that one, and it seemed hard, but for me it came out to be easy. So it worked out in my favor tonight.”

The person doing the “John Wall Dunk” at the beginning of the mix Wall talked about is dunk legend Myree “Reemix” Bowden.  Many others including Kenny Dobbs, JusFly, Sir Issac and Young Hollywood have performed it at many events but Reemix’s is about as perfect as a dunk contest dunk can be.

Let’s forward to the Summer that we are in right now.  The setting is Paris where NBA legend Scottie Pippen and still-a-Knick Carmelo Anthony attend the Quai 54 dunk contest.  Rafal Lipinski wins it by remixing Reemix’s trademark dunk and adding a chair under the person who the dunker is going to jump over.  For this dunk contest, the person standing on the chair is dunk legend Kadour Ziani.

A week later, Young Hollywood would perform the dunk at the Sprite/BET Awards dunk contest but over a lovely looking lady and by doing a between the legs dunk instead of a reverse. Although this was the dunk of the night, the contest (and the really tiny trophy) would be won by Guy Dupuy.

Then just a week later in Germany, Lipek would pull out a chair and the dunk again for the Reality Check Dunk Contest. It was clear that this was dunk was becoming the ultimate prop dunk.

Then last night, Guy and Young Hollywood would face off again at the Jordan XX9 Release Event in Vegas.  The scared shitless person that got to stand on the chair this time was guest judge Shad Moss ( bka Bow Wow formerly known as Lil Bow Wow from the movie “Like Mike”).  Hollywood made the dunk but unfortunately for him, Guy Dupuy won the contest again.

I’m not sure if you will be seeing this dunk in next year’s episode of “How bad can the NBA destroy the NBA dunk contest” but I can guarantee you will be seeing variations of this dunk at many more elite dunk contests….until we have something like this happen.
