Nothing seems to frustrate YouTube users more than reading a video title that says “dunks on” and it turns out that it was a “dunk by/around/near/whatever.” Since we don’t have a universally accepted definition of the “on,” we each have our own personal criteria that we use to debate with. And no player has been debated more on this topic than Shaq.
A lot of players have done a “dunk by” on Shaq. Many others have dunked “near him,” but Shaq is only willing to credit Derrick Coleman, Tim Perry and Michael Jordan as players to have “dunked on” him. Of those three, Coleman is the only one who can claim to have “posterized” Shaq.
That historic poster dunk came during Shaq’s rookie year and first meeting with the Nets in 1992. The rising Nets’ star scored 30 — one more than Shaq — and came away with the win over the Orlando Magic. After the game, Shaq vowed to never get posterized again and to make the Nets pay.
The next time they met in New Jersey, Shaq tore down the backboard – now that’s making them pay…literally. Then in their first meeting of the following season, Shaq put up a ridiculous 24 points 28 rebounds and 15 blocks (you read that stat line correctly).
Shaq doesn’t consider any other “nearby” dunks over the next 16 years worthy of being mentioned (JR Rider told me his tip dunk over Shaq counts)…. but we will let you decide.
