In episode No. 33 of our "In The Paint Show," co-hosts Devin Ugland and Ronnie Flores go hard on the world of basketball skills training. They break down how the industry has evolved over time, from qualified strength and conditioning trainers working with elite players to a whole wave of "Instagram Trainers" working with players of various skill level promotion unorthodox drills.
How did it get to the point where basketball heads on social media criticize the workouts of NBA players? It it justified? Are most trainer teaching bad habits and poor skills? Where is the industry headed?
The fellas welcome on special guests LaMont Peterson, a college scout for the Golden State Warriors, and well known SoCal based trainers Marc Rodgers and Clint Parks.
Peterson talks about how he began training elite high school players in the early 2000s and why he necessarily isn't against social media promotion. Peterson also discusses what he thinks is lacking in the training industry for high school players.
Rodgers and Parks train players of various ability and both employ "old school" training techniques without a lot of cones, chairs, and other bells and whistles. What do they see that most high school players lack? What areas do they focus on with young players? Are they against unconventional methods? Do they think the industry will change for the better in the coming years?
This week's pod offers plenty of quality perspective and experience, not to mention good advice and background in the training game, so make sure to check it out!
