Our staff is evaluating this weekend at various June Scholastic Live period events, including the TABC Boys Showcase in Dallas. TABC is a huge event and on Friday we had a chance to break down some terrific prospects in a scholastic setting.
Haynes Brookhart, Will Goolsby Shot the Cover Off the Ball
The 1:00 p.m. slate tipped off with Parish Episcopal taking on Kinkaid, and 2028 guard Haynes Brookhart wasted no time heating up from beyond the arc. As Brookhart caught fire, Parish quickly stretched its lead. He's a quick-release marksman who gets excellent elevation on his jumper and is constantly moving without the ball to create clean looks.
Another player worth mentioning for Parish Episcopal was 2027 Parker Hughston, who also proved to be a deep-range threat. Having both Hughston and Brookhart on the floor together created outstanding spacing and forced the defense to respect multiple perimeter shooters at all times.
EJ Beard, Mack Martin Did Themselves Plenty Good On Friday
The Height’s had a fun matchup vs. Austin Westlake as it ended in a sudden death victory for Westlake. Two players college coaches wanted to see, to see what level of talent they were, were EJ Beard for the Heights and Mack Martin for Austin Westlake.
EJ is a 2028 with a next level body with self creation skills and upside that has high majors showing high interest. Changed gears well, is more controlled when playing on the ball (even though the decision making will need to be cleaned up) and a good vertical athlete that plays with a level of toughness that translates.
Mack Martin is a 2027 prospect that has had us wanting more after watching him play in the past, but on Friday we saw that he was in attack mode. Playing off two feet when reaching the paint, he's also a reliable threat off the catch from three. Fought on the glass because he is one of, if not the tallest player on his team. His effort level and fight is what was impressive because the skillset is there, especially for someone that is 6’6. What level of D1 basketball he ends up playing is to be determined, but more higher end D1’s are showing interest now.
2029 Duo Beckett McCasland and Calvin Gilbert Will Be a 3-Year Problem
Beckett McCasland is a pesky lead guard with deep shooting range who consistently puts pressure on defenses. Despite his size, he beats defenders to spots, changes pace well, and has a knack for drawing fouls. He made the right reads off the dribble, consistently finding open shooters, while his shooting gravity forced defenders to stay attached, creating driving lanes for his teammates.
Calvin Gilbert is a fundamentally sound forward who is a handful inside 15 feet. Whether operating on the short roll or with his back to the basket, he displays advanced footwork, soft touch, and excellent passer feel when double-teamed. He consistently creates quality looks from the mid-post and low block, and his polished offensive game reminds me a bit of Drew Timme as a high school freshman.
Second Baptist Outlasts Dallas Carter in Overtime Thriller
It took an extra period to separate two defending state champions, as Houston Second Baptist edged Dallas Carter in one of the best games of the weekend.
We mentioned Will Goolsby earlier, but 2027 wing Broderick Wyatt was fantastic in this game. The powerfully built wing-guard bullied his way through traffic, using his strength to finish through contact with ease. He knocked down multiple 33-pointers, attacked the rim relentlessly, and looked completely unfazed by physical defenders. Wyatt has consistently produced in every setting I've watched this past year, and his stock continues to trend upward.
Five-star point guard Reese Alston once again showed why he's one of the premier playmakers in the country. His ability to command multiple defenders consistently created open looks for teammates, and with Second Baptist trailing by three late in regulation, he calmly buried the game-tying three to force overtime. Reese was at his best when he confidently stepped into perimeter shots, because once defenders have to respect his jumper, his already elite ability to get downhill becomes even more dangerous.

Another player who continues to improve is 2028 big man Kaiden Smith. At 6-foot-8, he may not overwhelm opponents with vertical explosiveness, but he's incredibly strong, secures the ball with two hands, and consistently finishes through contact. His size, physicality, and interior presence created problems for Carter's frontcourt throughout the game.
For Dallas Carter, 2027 Amarion Hunter didn't shoot it at the level we're accustomed to seeing, but there were stretches where his shot-making ability flashed. He needs very little separation to get his jumper off, making him a constant scoring threat.
Kaiden Eason was outstanding in transition, filling lanes hard and finishing plays above the rim. He's the type of player who wins games because he doesn't need the ball in his hands to make a major impact, a trait that should translate well to the college level.
Shaq Kizzee also had several encouraging moments. At 6-foot-10 with legitimate three-point range, his long-term upside is easy to see. When he stayed engaged and consistently imposed his size, his presence was felt on both ends of the floor. His combination of size and shooting will continue to attract plenty of college interest.
2027 Standouts We Evaluated
Royce Shelton, 6’ PG - Atascocita: Stop and pop scorer that showed a nice level of ball-handling craft and finishing.
Jonathan Bradley, 6’1ish PG - South Oak Cliff: Shifty, downhill bucket getter that you can look down, look back up and he’s already scored 10 straight points.
Ghaven Mittal, 6’5 SG - Concordia Lutheran: High IQ guard that does it all for his team. Scholarship level player with good positional size, skill level and feel.
Damon Miles, 6’3 CG - Clear Lake: Scoring guard that got sped up at times but a real shooting threat that has D1 self creation skills.
Maddox Davis, 6’4 SG - Kinkaid: Best basketball is ahead of him. Gangly guard with long strides, plus wingspan and a smooth shooting stroke. What he can end up being in 3 years is interesting.
Gavin Green, 5’10 PG Kingwood Covenant: Heady PG that shot it well from deep and actively got his teammates involved. Played within strengths and active with hands on defense.
John Joern, 6’3 SG - CY Woods: Found rhythm in his shooting yesterday and utilizes spins to create openings on his drive game. Very solid game where he’s a reliable 3-point threat.
Jae Lincoln, 6’6 SF - Humble: Uber talented wing with legit perimeter skills and athleticism. The engine needs to stay on more but the skills he possesses are all there. No brainer D1 player, if he goes to the right situation, will be playing Power 5 at some point.
Drew Guy, 6’5 SG - ESD: Jack of all trades guard that has grown as a vertical athlete and player. Physical driver, fine drive and kick guy that rebounds through physicality.
Hayden Woodbury, 6’7 PF - Fort Bend Christian: Used his height advantage and floor stretching skills to cause matchup problems vs his opponents. An interesting player that doesn’t pop out at you but is productive.
Landon Veal, 6’8 PF - Houston Christian: Big time athletic forward that has shown growth in his perimeter game. Fluid mover, jumps high and quick effortlessly and can step out and make a jumper from 15ft out from time to time. I like the direction his development is going.
2028 Standouts We Evaluated
Max Moody, 6’2 PG - South Oak Cliff: Exemplary pick n roll guy with smooth and quick shooting mechanics.
MJ Boyd, 6’1 PG - Grace Prep: 6’1 with long arms and big hands. Had his moments of nonchalantness which led to turnovers but when he was locked in, there wasn’t much anyone could do especially when he got to the rim. His hang-time allows him to contort in the air and finish in traffic.
Trey Wright: 5’11 PG - Frisco Lone Star: Even though football is his main sport, lot to like with Wright. Smooth scoring guard that’s a nice two foot leaper. Scoring seems to come easy for him.
Anthony Key, 6’7 PF/SF - Atascocita: Motor and versatility was present. He’s one of the best 2028’s we have in the state. Use his size advantage on the block and operate fine from the perimeter. A tough cover at his position.
Trey Edwards, 6’6 SG - Plano Prestonwood: Just like Jae Lincoln, can see the talent but the motor wasn’t where it needed to be. Offensively, scores it from the perimeter with ease because he’s a legit three ball threat.
2029 Impresses
Mike Sorrell Jr: 6’7 SF - ESD: Slow start in his first game but came around in his second. Seen a massive growth spurt in the past year in a half. Clean shooting stroke, but what impressed me was his quick decision making with the ball and knowing where to relocate to get a shot off.
