LOS ANGELES — It’s about that time.
NBA 2K27, perhaps the deepest installment of the long-running franchise, was revealed in full for the first time at 2K’s annual Community Day event at the Intuit Dome on Tuesday. In front of a crowd of over a hundred content creators, press, and a live streaming audience, a list of potentially era-defining updates were revealed to a positive reception.
The most pivotal developments that were revealed include major updates in animations and gameplay, a dramatic overhaul of MyCareer mode and a much-needed update to The City. MyNBA, 2K's dedicated franchise mode, also received a big time makeover that redefines the game mode.
NBA 2K27 Gameplay Developments
Some of the game’s most drastic updates will be immediately noticeable in gameplay, starting with the addition of Creative Offensive Weapons. The Expanded Dribbling Customization suite will allow players to create the most ambitious combination chains to date, breaking signature packages into decoupled individual movements. You can now include different individual dribbling animations to experiment like never before, adding a level to ball-handling that simply was not present in previous editions.
“I believe we broke down all of them into their own individual moves, or almost all of them,” 2K Gameplay Director Mike Wang explained. “Triple threat used to have like 4,5,6 categories. Now it's broken down into the stance, the jabs are separate. The step-overs are separate. Side-step is separate. Size up packages are the big one, which you guys use all the time. So now you can choose your behind-the back-escape, your hesi-escape, your cross escape, all separately. You can mix and match with different players. Pretty much free to mix and match whatever you want.”
The new Dynamic Layup Engine significantly changes the physics behind finishing at the rim, allowing for a new level of variation by emphasizing mid-air movements. The Dunk Meter is arguably the most significant and perhaps controversial gameplay update, as it now means that all dunk attempts are manually timed through the dunk meter. Gamers can also now replicate the step through up-and-under move made famous by stars like Anthony Edwards, which adds additional authenticity to offensive outcomes.
MyCareer
The most promising changes are coming to MyCareer, which presents a trio of unique variations to the game mode that serve as the most sweeping overhaul of any sports video game career mode in the ninth generation.
Players now have the option of embarking on the “Fire and Concrete” story mode, which features Vince Staples as MP’s Cousin Cam in an 11-chapter cinematic story that chronicles MP’s comeback to the sport after a car accident derailed his career as a top-ranked Duke recruit. The comeback story starts at the legendary Rucker Park and continues through the G League and then MP’s eventual emergence as an NBA superstar. Unlike past editions of MyCareer, there are no fixed draft positions and you could plausibly become the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft if your performance on the court merits.
There’s also the brand new option of co-op MyCareer, a groundbreaking development that turns 2K’s signature single-player game mode into a deepened multiplayer experience. The co-op mode introduces MP’s sidekick Trace Miller, a customizable teammate that is present for the length of the career mode. The storyline is centered around the authentic experience of having two attention commanding stars on one team at the same time, as MP and Trace will both grind with and compete against each other to become the true GOAT. The best part of co-op mode is that even when you don’t have your gaming partner online, Trace can still be controlled by the AI without a VC penalty.
MyCareer Eras
The most intriguing MyCareer update is something 2K fans have been waiting for for years now, which is the integration of MyEras into MyCareer. Formerly an option exclusive to MyNBA, which is essentially franchise mode, players can now start their MyCareer in one of four definitive eras throughout history. Whether you want to help build the league up with Magic and Bird in the 1980s, stop MJ’s 3-peats in the 1990s, or make the Eastern Conference palatable during the Kobe era in the 2000s and the LeBron era in the 2010s, you have options. Not to mention the Steph Era beginning in 2016, which I admit feels a bit too recent to be getting retro treatment. Every roster is historically accurate and there are 75 new MyEra courts that are true to their past look.
The City
The City has received some criticism for being stale in recent years, and it seems 2K’s developers made a concerted effort to liven and expand the experience this year by introducing new settings. Five new environments are being introduced to The Rec, which have been revealed as a School Gym, an Outdoor Court, a Private Gym, Crowded Arena, and a Season-themed venue. The Street Kings 3 v. 3 mode is back, where gamers combine to take on vaunted CPU bosses across three iconic venues. Rucker Park is the headliner, but players can also take the court on true-to-life recreations of The Hollows and Claremont Court.
For Philadelphia 76ers star Jaylen Brown, Rucker Park’s addition in NBA 2K27 hits different because of his personal involvement in creating the court’s current look.
“It’s super amazing to see Rucker Park now embedded into the game in 2K,” Brown said. “Me and A$AP Ferg designed the current design that's on Rucker Park. It came from my creative. Me and Ferg collaborated on it and brought the ancient Mesopotamian game of Ullamaliztli onto the court. Through the depiction of the ancestral game, we get to see it in live time in Harlem. It's pretty cool to see it in the game and share that with the world.”
In addition, The City now co-ed for the first time, allowing both male and female MyPlayers to take the court together. However, female MyPlayers will only be available for use in The City, as “The W” mode still remains the hub for WNBA MyCareer.
MyNBA
MyNBA has been one of the leading franchise modes in this generation of sports gaming, and the updates that were revealed on Tuesday only deepen it. The mode's key new features are the introduction of a dedicated player lock mode that allows gamers to control the NBA superstar of their choice as opposed to running the franchise as a whole. 2K27 also introduces a 100-Year Legacy, which allows to continue a save in their original character's lineage after retirement. That means you could, hypothetically, play Victor Wembanyama's entire career before taking over the career of Victor Wembanyama Jr. Or you could live out some the historic father-son coaching lineages we've seen come through the league over time, like David and Rick Adelman. How well you do with your initial character determines how dominant your lineage will be, however, so make sure to set a good example.
