We already knew we were in for an all-time NBA offseason just from some of the rumblings we’ve heard from insiders the last few months, but the expectations have already been blown out of the water amidst the opening of free agency at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT on Tuesday, June 30 .
Per usual, teams have already been negotiating and verbally agreeing to contracts with their pending free agents since the conclusion of the NBA Finals, with a handful of franchises already securing the players they may have been worried about losing this summer. Other teams haven’t been as lucky, and have already parted ways with superstars who at one time defined their franchise. The dates listed next to each transaction below are the date in which they were initially reported.
The Stove Is Already Hot
The NBA offseason has already seen a seismic shift in the City of Los Angeles, as both the Lakers and Clippers said farewell to franchise icons on Tuesday. In the morning, ESPN’s Shams Charania broke the news LeBron James would be continuing his NBA career in 2026-27 with a franchise besides the Lakers, ending an 8-year run with the league’s most iconic franchise that cemented his legacy to some and complicated it for others. As it stands, James is currently favored to end up with the Golden State Warriors, but the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers have found themselves in the mix for their own reunions with the King.
In the early afternoon, the Clippers parted ways with superstar Kawhi Leonard, sending him back to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for a hefty return highlighted by Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick. The news of James’ and Leonard’s respective departures from Tinseltown comes nearly a week after the bombshell trade that began the offseason, as the Charlotte Hornets traded LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Naz Reid and a handful of draft picks.
Wednesday brought even more fireworks, as the Boston Celtics finally pulled the trigger and dealt Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for a package that includes Paul George, two first round picks and two second round picks.
