In the early ’90s, when TBS was just showing local Atlanta Hawks game and everything started five minutes after the hour, one of my favorite players to watch was Stacey Augmon aka The Plastic Man. I became a fan of his high-flying game back in the late 80’s when he was playing for the unstoppable Runnin’ Rebels team with Greg Anthony, Anderson Hunt and Larry Johnson. I became a much bigger fan when he started making weekly appearances on NBA Inside Stuff’s Jam Session segment and made multiple appearances on the original VHS hoop mixtape, Jam Session in 1992.
He put up some good all-around stats during those Atlanta TBS days, then became a valuable journeyman on the Pistons, Blazers, Hornets and Magic. Now he’s back where it all started, as an assistant coach for UNLV, where he became the first three-time winner of the NBABC Defensive Player of the Year award and a NCAA Champion. He is also in the UNLV Hall of Fame.
It might be a stretch, but this could be the greatest birthday tribute to The Plastic Man of all-time.
