When rookie of the year Damian Lillard hit a 3 pointer to tie the game with 10 seconds left, I thought Portland was going to go into OT and come out with another victory as the legend of Lillard grows. But former rookie of the year and current 6th man Tyreke Evans came through with a game winning jumper over Mo Williams with 1.2 on the clock. The sell out crowd of 17,000 went crazy after Evans’ 20th point (also had 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks) went down and I started thinking about Evans’ rookie season and where he is now.
After Tyreke Evans’ rookie season, he was being mentioned in the same sentence as Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan and LeBron since they were the only other rookies to ever average 20/5/5. Injuries and playing out of position hurt his numbers and game over the next few seasons and now he’s a 6th man for the 14-15 Pelicans while latter rookie of the year winners like Lillard are being mentioned with the league’s best and projected to become a perennial all-star that many thought Evans was going to be. He has all the tools to do it but he’s not going to do it coming off the bench in New Orleans.
