Why the Sky can cover

The Chicago Sky are coming off an 88-79 loss against Minnesota, after three straight wins against Dallas and Phoenix. They covered the spread in three of their last five games and covered in their two matchups against New York this season. In both games, Chicago was the underdog, and covered the +9.5 and +12 spread. The Sky, a team that is ten games back in the Eastern Conference standings, beat the Liberty, 86-82, back in June. Kahleah Copper led the way with 27 points, 7 rebounds, and shot 10-17. Sky Guard Marina Mabley scored 15 points in game two.

Chicago ranks third in three-point percentage (37.4) and run middle of the pack in offensive points scored, and opponent points allowed. Though there is a large discrepancy between New York and Chicago, regarding net rating, Chicago has been able to keep up with them this year.

Although Chicago doesn't have nearly as much depth on their bench, Sky guard Courtney Williams is shooting nearly 44 percent from the three. Chicago has size in Center Elizabeth Willaims, and Alanna Smith. Chicago is top 5 in offense and ranks 4th in offensive rebounds per game (8.6). In the last ten games, the Sky are averaging 86 points, compared to New York's 89 points. If you're betting on the WNBA, the high percentage of offensive scored is encouraging for the Chicago Sky.

Prediction

The New York Liberty are finally finding their stride, and team chemistry, as we get closer to the playoffs. New York had an impressive 99-61 win over the Aces, in which Sabrina Ionescu dominated with 31 points. With Ionescu finding a rhythm from the three-point, Jonquel Jones had her second straight game with rebounds in double figures. In the month of July, Jones hit double digit rebounds in six of eleven games. With Breanna Stewart mentioned as an MVP candidate, New York has depth, especially with the return of Stefanie Dolson.

The Chicago Sky beat the New York Liberty on the road once and are looking to do it again. Although I don't have Chicago outright winning this game, they are 15-11-2 against the spread this season, and +12.5 seems a bit high. In their last six road games, Chicago is 5-1 against the spread. The New York Liberty are dominating, finding their groove, and haven't unlocked their full potential. Based off of the matchups this year, the Liberty struggled to maintain big leads. In fact, New York blew a 19-point lead in their most recent loss against Chicago. Overall, New York is the better, more dominant team. The Sky covered the +9 and +10.5 spread against Dallas, who is a top three team this season. If you're betting on the WNBA, the best choice would be Chicago, +12.5.

Las Vegas Aces 1st Half Spread -10.5 (-104)

Washington Mystics Betting Trends

  • Washington Mystics: 1-4 in their last 5 games.
  • 3-7 in their last 10 games.
  • ATS Record: 12-16-0
  • O/U Record: 11-6-1
  • 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
  • 4-6 ATS in their last 10 games.
  • O/U is 2-3 in the last 5 games.
  • O/U 5-5 in the last 10 games.
  • 9th in Offensive Rating (99.2)
  • 4th in Defensive Rating (99.8)
  • 7th in Points Per Game (80.5)
  • Opponent Points Per Game 81 (4th)
  • Washington ATS won last 10 games: Seattle (-4.5), New York (+10), Phoenix (-3.5), Atlanta (+8)

Las Vegas Aces Betting Trends

  • Las Vegas Aces: 4-1 in their last 5 games.
  • 9-1 in their last 10 games.
  • ATS Record: 16-12-0
  • O/U Record: 17-11-0
  • 3-2 ATS in their last 5 games.
  • 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games.
  • O/U is 1-4 in the last 5 games.
  • O/U 4-6 in the last 10 games.
  • 1st in Offensive Rating (114)
  • 1st in Defensive Rating (97.2)
  • 1st in Points Per Game (93.6)
  • Opponent Points Per Game: 79.8 (2nd)
  • Las Vegas Aces ATS won last 10 games:  Minnesota (-11.5), Phoenix (-17), LA (-12.5), Minnesota (-14), Dallas (-11), Atlanta (-13.5), Dallas (-8.5)

Why the Aces can cover

This will be the first matchup of the season between the top seed Las Vegas Aces versus the Washington Mystics. The Aces are coming off a 104-84 win against the Dallas Wings. The Washington Mystics lost their last game, 91-72 against the Phoenix Mercury.

Las Vegas has been as dominate in every category that you can think of. Besides their rare 99-61 loss against the Liberty, Vegas ranks first in offensive, and defensive ratings. The Aces have a net rating of 16.8, which is significantly higher than any other team in the WNBA. Ther reigning WNBA champions are 16-12 against the spread this season and covered three out of the last four games.

The Aces have been favored to win all 28 of their games this season. Furthermore, Becky Hammons squad has selected to win by 15 or more points in 11 of those games. To break it down even further, Vegas has been favored by double digits 22 out of their 28 games. The largest opening spread besides tonight was -19 against Phoenix, in which they covered.

Prediction

The Washington Mystics have injuries to Elena Delle Donne, Ariel Atkins, Shakira Austin, and Kristi Toliver. Though the Mystics rank fourth in defense, they are 9th in total offensive output, and are 1-4 ATS in the last five games, and 3-7 in the last ten. In their last five, Vegas had a commanding 28-point halftime lead over the Dallas Wings, and 17 lead over Atlanta. Besides their loss to New York, they outscored their opponents by 126 points by the half. In their last ten games, the Aces are averaging 90 points, and the Mystics 80. This squad, led by Becky Hammon clinched a playoff spot, however, I expect them to cover at halftime.
