Chicago Curie's Elijah Joiner and Harvey Thornton's Alonzo Verge are widely considered two of the top guards in the area. Both are Chicago-area Player of the Year as well as Illinois Mr Basketball contenders. They're also friends.
Joiner's Curie squad won last season's Illinois 4A state title and are a threat to repeat. Verge transferred in as a senior and is trying to lead Thornton to won of their best season's in recent memory. The attention of the Chicago basketball world was focused on this rare city (Curie) vs suburban (Thornton) mid-season matchup.
It took place at TF North's Bob Hambric Shootout (Calumet City, IL) honoring the late great Chicago Simeon head coach.
The gym was packed and fans didn't leave disappointed. The game between 2 top 20 teams just wasn't as close as some might've expected.
The Curie Condors shot lights-out all night and it was too much for Thornton.
Moving to 15-2, Senior guard and Tulsa-commit Elijah Joiner finished with 21 points. His backcourt mate Allante Pickens added 18.
Alonzo Verge had some electrifying moments but never really got comfortable. He finished with 13 points.
Ballislife will continue following Elijah Joiner and Alonzo Verge in their quests to win an Illinois state title.
