The NBA. ESPN. Wikipedia. All of these websites need to update Kevin Durant’s height because he is not 6’9 and probably hasn’t been since he got his driver’s license.
On Monday, the near 7 foot small forward and his Team USA members made some surprise visits around New York while revealing a not-so-surprise secret: Kevin Durant is at least 6’11…or taller if you are a hot girl.
“For me, when I’m talking to women, I’m 7 feet,” Said Durant to the Wall Street Journal back in May. “In basketball circles, I’m 6-9.”
OK! That makes sense, but why 6’9?
“I’ve always thought it was cool to say I’m a 6-9 small forward,” he said. “Really, that’s the prototypical size for a small forward. Anything taller than that, and they’ll start saying, ‘Ah, he’s a power forward.’ ”
That also makes sense. Kevin Garnett didn’t want to be known as a 7 footer because he didn’t want to be a center; That’s why former coach Flip Saunders used to say KG’s height was 6’13. But why wont (non dating) website and trading cards list Durant’s correct height, especially since they are known for adding a couple of inches: If you have ever stood next to Charles Barkley or Hakeem Olajuwon then you would know they are not 6’6 and 7’0. I’ve stood next to Hakeem and Kevin Durant and I would be willing to make a bet that Durant is taller than the (6’10 max) Dream.
How Tall Was KD in High School?
According to Bio, Durant grew 7 inches during his first 3 years of high school before hitting 6’9 as a senior. In April of 2006, the New York Times wrote an article about Durant at the end of his senior year and listed the 17 year old at 6’10.
A couple of NBA draft sites and scouts also had the long-looking Longhorn listed at 6’10 before the NBA draft, where he was picked 2nd behind the 7 foot bust that is Greg Oden.
6’9? I don’t think so.
But we don’t need to keep comparing pics of him next to taller players like Oden, DeAndre Jordan and Boogie Cousins because he slipped up earlier this season and admitted how tall he was after being asked about a game-saving block on Chris Paul.
“He’s 6 feet tall,” Durant replied. “And I’m 6-11.”
There you have it straight from the horse’s mouth: Kevin Durant is 6″11 and Chris Paul is 6’0…actually, I think CP3 might be closer to 5’11.
