Sierra Canyon Defeats Etiwanda For The Open Division Title

Top-seeded and top-ranked Sierra Canyon (30-0) trailed only twice (at 5-4 and 7-6) before settling down and using the performances of its three big stars, Juju Watkins, Izela Arenas and Mackenly Randolph, to win its first-ever CIF Southern Section Open Division championship with a 70-57 victory over the No. 2 seed Eagles. Watkins, a 6-foot-2 UCS-bound senior, had for her was just another day at the office after finishing with a double-double 24 points and 11 rebounds with six blocked shots. Arenas tallied 19 points (two three-pointers) and Randolph added a double-double 17 points and 11 rebounds with four blocks.

Sierra Canyon led 49-32 midway through the third quarter, but Etiwanda clawed and scratched its way back to a 64-57 deficit with 1:12 left, but the Trailblazers closed things out with a 6-0 run to claim the title, a first section open title not only for the school and head coach Alicia Komaki, but for Watkins as well.

Etiwanda (29-3) got 17 points from sophomore Aliyahna Morris, 13 points from senior Majesty Cade (four three-pointers) and 12 points from junior Kennedy Smith.
