It's way too early to be calling Zhou Qi the next Yao Ming or the "Asian Dirk" or even the "Asian Pozingis" but the 7'2 20-year old (there's been some controversy about his age) does have a nice jumper to go with a 7'7.75 wingspan and a no step vertical reach of 12" - 4th highest in the DX Draft Express database, behind Ben Simmons, Prince Ibeh and Greg Oden. With that combination of height, age and skills, Zhou has a few teams -- like Boston, Memphis and Miami -- very interested.
“I think his basketball English was good enough that it didn’t impede us from doing anything on the court,” Grizzlies vice president of basketball operations John Hollinger said after their workout. “I mean, obviously, we weren’t having detailed discussions about politics and economics or anything. … Very skilled for his size, very long frame, knows how to play.”
Now he just needs to add a few pounds to that 218 pound frame.
(UPDATE: The Houston Rockets drafted him in the 2nd round of the 2016 NBA Draft. He played the past season in China, averaging 16 points and 10 boards, and is planning on making the Rockets roster for the 2017/18 season.)
