I remember flipping through Slam Magazine and coming across a photo of Stephon Marbury with his little cousin, Sebastian Telfair aka Bassy.
I remember when that kid got older and people were selling VHS tapes of him on eBay.
I remember when that kid was on a cover of Slam Mag with LeBron James and the headline: The Takeover. Sebastian Telfair and LeBron James are about to rule the world. Imagine That.
I remember discussing on message boards (Inside Hoops!) how the two were going to take over the league.
I remember seeing a stand-out ESPN documentary about him called 'Through The Fire' and thinking this is one cocky kid ("What's up country?").
I remember when he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated, while he was still in high school.
I remember when he signed a shoe deal with Adidas, while he was still in high school.
I remember when he arrived at his high-school graduation in Jay-Z’s $500,000 Mercedes Maybach limousine.
I remember when he became the shortest player (6'0") to ever skip college and go straight to the NBA.
Unfortunately, there's not a lot to rave about after the Blazers picked Telfair with the 13th pick in the 2004 draft. He did put up some nice stats in Minnesota and Cleveland but ended up bouncing around to seven teams in 10 years before taking his talents to China, where cousin Marbury became a legend.
Although I haven't seen him play in a few years, he remains one of my favorite players to talk about because of all the hype he generated in the mid-00s, when he was one of the most exciting point guards in New York.
He was so exciting and such a big deal, if you go to the 2:00-minute mark of the following video, you can hear the Rucker Park announcer saying, "Sebastian Telfair is in the building," while some guys named Jay-Z and LeBron James walked behind him. Be sure to watch the rest of the video so you can see him Shammgod a defender near the end.
