NCAAW: Hidalgo, Crooks, Chavez Shine in Record-Breaking Wednesday Performances

On Wednesday’s slate of NCAA women’s basketball games, rising stars Hannah Hidalgo, Audi Crooks, and Aaliyah Chavez all had historic career nights!

From breaking the record for most steals in a single game to an impressive performance by a freshman, here are Wednesday’s standout player accomplishments.

Hannah Hidalgo Records 16 Steals in Notre Dame’s Win

Junior guard Hannah Hidalgo set a new NCAA Women’s Basketball Division I record for most steals in a single game with 16 during Notre Dame’s dominant win over Akron.

Additionally, she scored 44 points, the most in Fighting Irish women’s basketball history, surpassing Jewell Loyd’s 41-point record set in 2014 against DePaul.

Adding to her performance, Hidalgo nearly notched a triple-double, adding nine rebounds and four assists.Β  She has now achieved her 11th career 30-point game for Notre Dame, tying Arike Ogunbowale for most in program history.

Against Akron, Notre Dame recorded 30 steals, the second-highest total in a single game in program history. Additionally, the Fighting Irish (3-0) have tallied double-digit steals in all three games played this season, each resulting in a victory.

Following Olivia Miles’ departure to TCU in the offseason, Hidalgo has emerged as a leader for the Fighting Irish team, who enter the season with national championship aspirations.

The reigning ACC Player of the Year is considered one of the top players in women’s college basketball, known for her scoring on all three levels and her defensive intensity.

Hidalgo has accomplished so much in her first two years with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and still has plenty to contribute to women’s basketball in the upcoming years.Β 

Audi Crooks Scores 43 Points in 20 Minutes

Iowa State junior center Audi Crooks scored 43 points Wednesday night in just 20 minutes of action during the Cyclones’ win over the Valparaiso Beacons.

Her 43 points set a program record for the most points in a single game, surpassing Tonya Burks’ previous record of 42 points against Nebraska in 1984.

According to Tommy Birch of The Des Moines Register, Crooks was playing through an illness that had caused her to vomit earlier in the game. She said, β€œI’m not going to tell anybody that I’m not feeling good, because then they’re not going to play me.”Β 

β€œThey stood behind her and played one-on-one,” Iowa State women’s basketball head coach Bill Fennelly said, via The Des Moines Register. β€œAnd there’s people who can do that to herβ€”you can probably count them on one hand. That’s a hard thing to do because her positioning is good, her hands are good, and her feet are good.”

Aaliyah Chavez Makes it Rain From Three!

Freshman guard Aaliyah Chavez, a five-star recruit in the 2025 class, delivered one of her best performances early in her college career as the No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners, who defeated Kansas City on Wednesday.

In her breakout performance, Chavez scored a career-high 29 points, made seven 3-pointers, and added four rebounds and four assists. Chavez was feeling it from the 3-point line early. which set the tone for the Sooners.

The performances of Chavez, Crooks, and Hidalgo highlight just how bright the future of women’s basketball is.Β  Their efforts on Wednesday signify how special and talented these young women are.
