In the latest episode of Detail, Oscar-winner Kobe Bryant (who is currently teaching the triangle offense to his daughter’s basketball team) reviews Summer League footage of Trae Young. He breaks down how the No. 5 pick  can better understand the strategy of the game and create options for himself in the pros.

The former Ballislife All-American averaged 17 points (38 FG%) and 6.8 assists during four games in the Las Vegas Summer League after averaging just 12.7 points (23 FG%) and 4.3 assists in the Utah League.

GIGI’S FAVORITE PLAYER

Despite the rough start at Summer League, Young had a spectacular rookie season. If it weren’t for some guy named Luka, Young’s 19.1 points and 8.1 assists would have been good enough to win Rookie Of The Year.

In his second season, Young added another 10 points to his scoring average and made the All-Star team. It was also during this season that Young became Gigi Bryant’s favorite player. She even got to attend a Hawks game with her Dad and met Young afterwards.

Kobe and Gigi passed away a month later.

Trae honored Kobe by wearing the No. 8 in a game.

Young was ranked 23rd in the Class of 2017 and 4th among point guards behind Trevon Duval (6), Collin Sexton (7), and Jaylen Hands (20). His thoughts on those rankings:

“I should’ve been #1. No BS. I had to argue with my teammate all the time in practice who was better.”
